Imaginative Play with Little Adventures

Imaginative Play

My kids love imaginative play. Pretending a section of the floor is lava that they must get around, saving a stuffed animal from ‘danger’, Princess Rapunzel fighting off an invading dinosaur are all things they come up with. Almost anything can be used in imaginative play, boxes, toys, rocks, dress up clothes…you name it.

They especially love being able to dress up. It’s not uncommon to see a superhero, princess, ballerina, or storm trooper walking around. The problem I’ve found is that costumes are expensive. They can be found on sale at Halloween but it’s gotten to where they are so picked through there’s not much of a selection or I can’t find the right size.

The kids are kind of funny when it comes to the material of costumes. My son will typically wear a costume for about 10 minutes max and then it’s itchy or annoying him.

I don’t know about you but, from what I have found a lot of Halloween costumes aren’t exactly quality material. I haven’t bought “cheap” ones either, these have come from well-known stores like the Disney Princess one I had to wash and then the bottom seam was all tattered and coming apart.

Both kids have gone through recent growth spurts and so a lot of their old costumes aren’t fitting anymore. They both asked for capes, the towels they were using weren’t staying on while they were trying to play. This not only annoyed them, but I had to stop every 3 minutes to try and re-adjust/fix it. I went online to do a search and see what I could find, initially thinking I would try and make it.

Little Adventures

I came across Little Adventures and fell in love with their selections, not to mention their affordability. They have the most adorable princess dresses! Including a Cinderella Day Dress that I have never seen anywhere else.

Selection

My favorite part though, was the selection of heroes and adventure. There are capes and tutu’s that will appeal to girls, as well as capes, knight costumes, and crusader costumes that boys will love. Did I mention dragon wings and capes with swords? They have those too!

Sword and Shield Set – Red

There’s also a wide variety of mask that you can purchase to mix and match.

I purchased two capes (they came with mask), one for each kid.

Capes from littleadventures.com littlemissblog.com

It didn’t take long at all for me to receive them. They kids were ecstatic!

Quality

The quality of them impressed me a lot. I sort of expected just a piece of material made into a cape. This was a finished product. There outside it a velvet type material but the inside lining is a smooth satin like material. There is velcro on the front to attach the sides. The fantastic thing about this is that a lot of times with capes that tie the kids wind up “choking” and that hasn’t happened. The velcro holds securely but comfortably.

Heroes

Super flash

So far, these have held up very well. They have been worn a lot! I have constantly had people stop me to tell me how cute they are or ask where I got it.

Imagination and Creative Play for Kids

Imagination is more important than knowledge- Einstein littelmissblog.com

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”-Albert Einstein Share on X

Imagination

Imagination is the door that leads to endless possibilities. Imaginative play encourages cognitive and social development in children. Through it, kids learn creativity,  how to think outside the box and be resourceful.

Without realizing it, they are learning about the world. They learn skills to manipulate materials, express themselves (both verbally and non-verbally), plan, act, interact, react, and try different roles.

From The Scholastic Website -Young children learn by imagining and doing. Have you ever watched your child pick up a stone and pretend it is a zooming car, or hop a Lego across the table as if it were a person or a bunny? Your child is using an object to represent something else while giving it action and motion. But this pretend play is not as simple as it may seem. The process of pretending builds skills in many essential developmental areas.

Disney Imagination Quote littlemissblog.com

“Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age and dreams are forever.” Walt Disney Share on X

Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education uses critical thinking skills and creative problem solving abilities as goals for a child’s development.

Critical thinking skills and creative problem solving skills are developed through imagination, trying new things and experimenting.

Participating in activities such as playing with playdoh, creating a “recipe” by mixing dirt and water, splashing in puddles or pretending to fly- we are furthering a child’s development.

A great example of this is talked about in Mom Loves Best article- Why Playtimes is an Essential Part of Childhood Development

Social Benefit

It also helps build social/emotional development when kids are able to contemplate different solutions- leading to their confidence being built and therefore being more comfortable interacting with others.

Imaginative play opens up a world of endless learning opportunities.

Alexa Skills To Keep The Kids Entertained

Filed Under: Kids August 14, 2017

Our Favorite Alexa Skills That Keep My Kids Entertained littlemissblog.com

We’ve had Alexa for a few months now. We even added an Echo Dot because it’s easier to take out to our patio and link with our speakers. That’s a whole other story 🙂

Alexa is just as popular with the kids as she was she I first got her.  A few of their favorite ways to entertain themselves (in between yelling matches to changing songs)-

1. Playing “it’s raining tacos”

via GIPHY

OMG this song is stuck in my head. It’s the only song they can agree on when it plays

2. Laugh Box

via GIPHY

“Alexa, open the laugh box” The kids absolutely love this.  The great thing is, even when Alexa has no idea what they are saying she replies with “I can’t find that one but here’s [insert laugh type here].

3. Magic door

via GIPHY

“Alexa, open the Magic Door” The Magic Door is an interactive adventure game with original stories. Let Alexa know what choices to make as you navigate a forest, a garden, or an ancient temple. You can find hidden items, solve riddles, and help magical creatures. You can also find magical items to get a prize!(Amazon Official Description)

4. List

via GIPHY

One of my favorite things about Alexa is the ability to create a list.  This way, when I realize I’m out of something I can say “Alexa, add (whatever it is) to my grocery list.

Then, using the IFTTT app it puts it into my IOS Reminders app and when I’m at the grocery store it’s right there.  I no longer have to worry about leaving my list at home. Here’s the problem though.  The kids have picked up on how to do this so I hear this alot..

“Alexa. Add Nutella to the grocery list”

“Alexa, add chocolate to the grocery list”

“Alexa, add marshmallow cereal to the grocery list”

5. Deal or No Deal?

via GIPHY

Kids Bored?  Play Deal or No Deal with Alexa!  My kids are too small to try and keep up with any of the cases however they get a kick out of being able to respond deal or no deal to her.

2. Children- the similarities and differences

This post is so cute!  It’s funny because I often watch my kids and it amazes me their similarities and their differences.  My interaction with each of them is different based on their personality.  It’s so much fun to watch them grow and see these personalities come out.

3. Why I Don’t Use Cry It Out- The Coffee Mom.

I hadn’t actually asked my own pediatrician about this, because my husband and I argued over it. My pediatrician explained-  If she cries, pick her up. She’s crying because it’s her only form of communication. She can’t talk yet. Babies don’t even connect those dots that you will come when they cry until around 6-7 months. Even then only if it becomes a constant thing should you purposely let them ‘cry it out.’  I just don’t believe in letting an infant wonder if you’re there. I know everyone has their own methods and beliefs.  I really liked this post though.

***Disclaimer to new moms.  Those moments when the baby is crying and you can’t soothe them and you’re ready to pull your own hair out- laying them down in their crib and stepping away to compose yourself and get a breath is completely different.  A frustrated, overwhelmed mommy and a cranky baby mix like oil and water.  To me this has nothing to do with making them cry it out**

My Problem: Too Many Books, But Not Enough Books

My Problem: Too Many Books, But Not Enough Books

My Problem: Too Many Books But Not Enough. Littlemissblog.com
*This post contains Affiliate Links. This means if you chose to use the product/service, I may receive a small comission at no additional cost to you*

My kids love books. They have a lot of books.  A LOT. To the point I don’t really know what to do with them.  Adding to this, my daughter has to do “Reading Logs” for school. She has to read a book, draw a picture related to it and write a sentence or two about her favorite part.

Easy peazy! Right? Have you ever tried to get a 6 year old to sit down and do this in the evening? What I would think would take 35 minutes tops takes an hour to an hour and a half.  It’s either she’s drawing a very detailed picture or she doesn’t want to write- the list goes on.

Books, Books, & More Books

The other issue that comes up is  books. We literally went through all the books we could use last year and I bought a few more.  While we have a lot of books, some are more toddler focused, some are longer chapter books and then there’s those that she just doesn’t really care for. 4 nights a week with a book log each night for the school year.  I’ll let you do the math in that :).

What it adds up to is a heck of a lot of books.  I have no idea where to store all these books and I’m really running out of room. There’s some that I can’t get rid of because they love them. For example we’ve got around 10 different Pete the Cat books and they are read often. This is putting me in a tough situation both with finding a place to keep them and finding new books for logs to be done on this year.  While some of the books would still be ok for first grade, my child has this crazy good memory which would’ve lead to the “but I’ve already done this one” fight.

There is always the library, however, they only go once a week at school. I totally understand they don’t have time to do it everyday. If I attempt to make the library trip and then make sure I keep up with the books and get them back…there’s a 98% chance it won’t happen.

Theres An App For That!

I recently found an app that is a solution to my problem. “The Netflix of Kids’ Books” known as epic!

mom and daughter

The app is geared towards books for kids ages 1-12.  The books are accessible on your phone, computer, iPad, tablet, kindle…wherever you need it. There is a HUGE selection of books available under a wide variety of topics. For example-

fantasy

travel tales s

nat geo

and more!

For younger kids it can be set for the app to read to them or you can turn off that feature if you are doing the reading.

Features

You can get the the first month free and then it’s $7.99 a month with unlimited access to books.  You can have up to 4 profiles (not including your ‘Parent’ profile) if you have multiple kids. Keep track and see what they’ve read as they earn badges for their reading.

Considering it’s  the cost (or lower) for me to buy one book and I’m getting access to unlimited ones I don’t think it’s a bad deal at all. In fact, it’s a pretty sweet one when you think about it.

Epic! App, Parent Screen. Littlemissblg.com
Sample of Book options

You also have the option of reading offline! Slide over the button on the left side. Littlemissblog.com

Offline Books Access Available!

Bonus Points

Did I mention there are NO ads  or in-app purchases?  I hate when the kids are on an app and something keeps popping up to purchase it drives me nuts! Thankfully there’s no worry about it with the epic! app.

Also!! If you are an Elementary School Teacher or a Librarian you can get FREE access! Check out the epic! site to see how!

Back To School

Back 2 School Season

Back to School season...are you ready? Littlemissblog.com

It’s that time of the year!  Back to School! I’m in the minority when it comes to feelings on it. There’s moms that can’t wait to get the kids back to school and then there’s the few that dread it.

I understand that it gets chaotic having them home all day.  My mom would always tell us she didn’t look forward to school starting back. I could tell in the way she said it and her consistency with it she meant it.  It definitely made me feel good as a kid and even now looking back.

My mom though has crazy patience. No kidding! I didn’t inherit all that but wish I had.  She seriously defines patience when it comes to her kids.

Back to School season and the homework begins littlemissblog.com

I dread school starting because it mean I have to make sure things like homework are completed.  My daughter is going into first grade.  It sounds funny, but there is some serious homework that they do. It’s tough too when you work, get home, have dinner, then rush for homework and baths.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the need for homework. I even see the benefits she has gained with it. It’s a structured way to practice what they are learning during the day. But OMG sometimes I just want a break to not have to sound nagging to complete homework.

My daughter is totally looking forward to school starting and is counting down the days so I guess the nagging doesn’t stick out too much to her, lol.

Not ready for back to school? Littlemissblog.com

I’m thankful she attends an incredible school and that even up to this point has learned so much. I just wish there were a couple more weeks of summer before it all starts.

Budgeting For The Win

https://thinkingofsomeday.com/budgeting-do-it-stop-thinking-about-it/

This post from thinkingofsomeday.com is an interview by Kim & Omar of Kim’s friend Jessica and how she feels after setting a budget and sticking to it.

I think there are people that see budgeting the same way they see dieting. ‘I’ll eat only green beans for three months and lose the weight I want!’ LOL  So they do it and are miserable for 3 months, lose the weight and then gain it all back with the first slice of pizza they eat. If they decide to approach their “diet” as making healthier eating choices they aren’t nearly as miserable and they truly get a benefit from it.

Budgeting doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. It’s about contentiously making healthy money decisions. You may hate it at first but then you’ll see how much better you feel on a regular basis. Like Jessica says in her interview-

Budgeting can feel a bit restricting at first. However, once I learned exactly where the money in the house is going and needs to go, I could put into my budget for “free money” to do fun activities with friends and the boo thang. Lol!

Check it out! I hope you find it as inspiring as I did 🙂

Two Year Old Finds Perfect Way To Endear Fellow PassengersTwo Year Old Fist Bumps

I LOVE this post from Mommy Shorts ❤️. I mean, how adorable is this kid? And how do you get irritated with a child on a flight who is getting restless after the fist bumped you at the beginning of the flight?  Face it..you made a connection with that fist bump and now you’re a little more likely to overlook any restlessness this kid might have on the flight. Brilliant parenting idea!

Side note- there’s nothing saying that this adorable little boy got restless on the flight he could be a total champ flyer I’m just saying….he fist bumps you and your heart grows a little bigger. My did just from watching him ❤️

Sick Kids..Just how you wanted to kick off your weekend. My Kinda Thermometer and Aden and Anais blankets helped us through the night. littlemissblog.com

This past weekend started out with the kids getting sick.  Anytime one of your kids is sick it’s not fun, and when you have more than one child and they are both sick it’s near torture.  I’d much prefer a Disney Stay in a Story Room or anything else really.   “Hold me!” “No, I want you to hold me!” Thankfully, mine are 6 and 3 so I can still manage to hold them both on the couch.  However, it’s not long before they start fighting or complaining that the other one is too close.

This is when being a mom is really tough.  The kids are cranky because they don’t feel good and you want to sympathize and baby them some but then you can’t let them bicker and gripe at each other.  I don’t know about your kids but both mine annoy each other pretty equally when they want to.

Kinsa Smart Stick Digital Thermometer To My Rescue

Sick kids are rough, but I love the Kinsa Smart Stick Digital Thermometer . It makes it so much easier on me to track any fever.  The Kinsa Smart Stick Thermometer connects to your smart phone and keeps track of fevers for you. It’s so handy and easy to use.  You have to read the directions though when it comes to using the extension.   I was so mad that I almost threw the thermometer away because I thought it wouldn’t work.   Finally, I sat down and saw that I had to first connect the thermometer directly to the phone THEN I could use the extension and connect it to the phone.

Kinsa Thermometer- keeping track of kids fevers when sick

Each child has their own profile, so if more than one kid is sick at at time (which is what happened to me recently) then you are able to easily track each one.

Kinda Profile 1- easily make profiles for each child on your Kinsa App!

Kinda Profile for each child. Easily track each child’s fever separately.

There’s a lot of great features in their Resources area as well-

Kinda Resources- Resources that can be found on your Kinda App!

They each took a cool bath, which meant that I was running from the bathroom to the living room to keep a check on both kids.  It helped, but at one point their fevers got high.  This was when I realized that I had run out of Tylenol and Motrin.  I know, who does that? Right?!  My husband ran down and got some along with some gatorade.  I gave each kid some Tylenol and it came down some (thankfully).

Fever = Cold Kid

The other hard part to me about a child with a fever is when they are cold.  You obviously don’t want to put blankets on them or wrap them up in sweats however at the same time you don’t want them to be miserably cold on top of sick.  Enter my favorite blankets on the planet.

I had some aden by Aden + Anais  swaddle blankets from when my son was born (not to mention many other things in their line because the products are FANTASTIC!).  The swaddle blankets are made of muslin material which is light and breathable. The blankets also get softer each time you wash them.  What could be better than that?? I put one over each kid which sufficed them being cold but wasn’t a heavy blanket either.

Aiden and Anais Blankets used for more than just infant swaddling!

I keep a couple of these in the car as well so for when they get cold.  Typically this is when we are going out of town (but you know kids).  They are light and easy to store away which is a huge plus for me.

All better…

Thankfully, it seems to have been a one evening deal and all is well now. It sucks having sick kids, but when you can find things to comfort them or make it easier to care for them a little bit of stress can be relieved. When you are a parent, every little bit counts :).

What do you do when your kids are sick? Have you found anything that helps comfort them or makes it easier for you to care for them?
