How to Set Up a Home Study Area for Your Kids

How to Set Up a Home Study Area for Your Kids

Guest post from Heather Viera of Family Living Today.

The after-school chaos can make it tough to get everyone settled down for homework. The right study area can help your kids get comfortable and stay focused. If you’re worried because you only have a corner of the living room to dedicate to homework, there’s hope. While a separate room is ideal, it’s in no way absolutely necessary for a successful study area. We’ve got a few tips to help you get started.

Location is Key

You can’t set up a study area just anywhere. It should be somewhere that’s fairly quiet. However, if you don’t have an unused nook or cranny, you can make one. Is there a corner of your family room or kitchen that’s relatively dead space? Or an area that’s away from foot traffic? Sometimes entryways have an unused corner or you can convert part of a formal dining room.

If you really don’t have any extra space, consider setting up a cart with everything your child needs. Once it’s study time, you can roll the cart out to the kitchen table. It may not be ideal, but it will help get your child transition into homework mode and get some work done.

Declutter

You’ve decided on the space, now it’s time to declutter. Clutter can actually contribute to anxiety and depression. It probably doesn’t bother your children as much as it does you. However, you want their study space to be as distraction-free as possible. If there’s already furniture, make room for a desk and chair. For those of you cleaning an entire room or loft, have three boxes labeled keep, throw, and donate to make the sorting easier.

Stock It Right

Now for the fun part. You can really tailor this space to your children. A desk or table and comfortable chair are a must. Children with attention issues or autism may need a special chair or other equipment to help them focus.

Children will use anything, like wandering through the house looking for a ruler, as an excuse to get out of homework. Stock this area with all the supplies your child might need. You can also have a few fun supplies so your child can be creative—glue, scissors, markers, and plenty of paper.

Older children may need a charging station for their devices while younger kids may need a file cabinet for all of their artwork. A wastepaper basket is also a good idea if you want to keep everything clean and tidy.

Set the Right Atmosphere

Part of setting up a good study area is understanding how your children learn. Some children love studying to music while others don’t. After sitting at a desk all day, some kids may prefer the sofa or floor over more time at a desk. Provide a few options to give your kids some variety.

It can be hard for some kids to focus, especially after a long day at school. Calm and quiet is the most helpful. If you have younger children who don’t have to do homework, set out puzzles, crayons, and paper, or books to reduce noise levels.

Conclusion

Once you’ve got everything set up, it might take some adjustments to get it just right. Have fun. Involve your kids if you want. Your children may not love to study, but a space that’s designated specifically for them might help alleviate a few battles.

Disney with Little Ones-Things To Know

toddlers at disney world

When you consider taking your little one on a Disney trip, you can have a lot of questions and concerns.  What will they be able to do? Where should we stay? Do I need my pack-n-play? Just to name a few.   I’ve compiled some information and answers here to hopefully help you in your research of doing Disney with little ones.

Toddlers at Disney World

A trip with your little one to Disney World is very different from trips that you are probably used to.  You’ll see the parks with a new set of eyes.  The pace is slower, and you have to be ok with that in order for it to be fun but you will probably notice details and things you’ve never noticed before as well.  Toddlers at Disney World is a whole new adventure…trust me!

Disney Trip with Magical Memories for Parents

is2 too young for disneyland

You will never forget the wonder your little one experiences on their first Disney trip.  People often say their child is too young for Disney, and they won’t remember it anyway which there is some truth to but another piece of truth is that you will remember it.   It is one of the most magical things you experience as a parent.

Guest under the age of 3 get free entry into Disney Theme Parks and Disney Water Parks.

You read that correctly.  Guests under the age of 3 get in FREE! This is a fantastic benefit, especially when they are around 2-years-old, because you’re saving on their ticket but they will get a lot of enjoyment out of the sights, sounds and even rides at the park.

Benefits of Staying at a Disney Resort

Time Saver

Disney World

I HIGHLY recommend staying  at a Disney resort.  It is such a time and hassle saver.  My favorite park is Magic Kingdom and I do what I can to find a Magic Kingdom resort, which allows us to use either the monorail or boats. All Disney resorts though have transportation, which will still save you from having to lug everything from the parking lot to ticketing and transportation then to the park itself.

  Extra Magic HoursDisney

Resort guest get to enjoy extended Disney park hours.  These Extra Magic Hours offer a rare and unique opportunity to enjoy more time at the park, beyond the standard operating schedule at no extra charge!

Fast Pass+

When you stay at a Disney Resort, you are able to schedule your Fast Passes in advance so that you can spend less time in lines.  You can get passes for select shows, Character Greetings, as well as parade and firework viewing areas.

Disney Resort Benefits

  • Pack ‘n Play or crib in each room or available upon request.
  • In-room childcare for ages 6 months to 12 years—in partnership with independent childcare provider Kids Nite Out.
  • Some locations have fun-filled Child Activity Centers for ages 3 to 12.
  • Kid-friendly recreation. All Disney Resort hotels feature kiddie pools (in addition to full-size pools) and many have playgrounds. Some even feature kids-only activities.

In-Park Questions

Is there a Rider Swap option?

Yes! There is a rider swap option at select Disney Theme Park attractions.

What is Rider Swap?

It’s when guest with little ones too small to ride a particular attraction get to take turns riding as opposed to having to wait in a full line twice.  One guest will ride and then they will “swap” with another adult guest from their party to ride the ride without standing in line twice.  Cast Members at the attraction will be able to offer additional information.

Can I rent a stroller?

You can rent single day and multi-day strollers at the parks.  On the Disney Guidemap you will see a stroller symbol for where the rental is available at the park entrance.

Diaper Changes, Nursing, and More

Disney has Baby Care Centers located in the parks that are air-conditioned and offer private rooms with rocking chairs for nursing moms as well as diaper changing rooms and a room with highchairs.  They have cast members constantly cleaning and sanitizing these areas as well.  Also in the Baby Care Center, you’ll find diapers, formula, and teethers available for purchase.   On the Disney Guidemap you’ll see a pacifier symbol notating the Baby Care Center location.  The Baby Care Center is such a big help and can even give you a minute to sit down in the air conditioning after the diaper change or nursing.  As a mom, I found this helpful many times!

Yes, Taking Your Toddler To Disney World Is Worth It

Hopefully these questions have helped.  I completely believe taking your toddler to Disney is Worth it- even if they don’t remember, you will and you’ll have the pictures to prove it.

Coca-Cola and Atlanta- The Perfect Pair

Refresh Inspire Create World Of Coke

Some things in life just go together, like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Mickey and Minnie, and Coca-Cola and Atlanta.  The World Of Coca-Cola is a museum located in Atlanta, Georgia.  Calling it a Coca-Cola Museum doesn’t sound like it’s as much fun as it actually is.  There are exhibits, lots of Coke artifacts and history, including decorated coke bottles, the opportunity to visit with the Coca-Cola Bear as well as my favorite part- the tasting.

world of coca cola

What is the World of Coca Cola?

The World of Coca-Cola is located right across (literally walking across a lawn area) from the Georgia Aquarium. The tickets are $13 for kids (ages 3-12), $17 for Adults (ages 13-64) and $15 for Seniors (ages 65+).  Children under 2-years-old are free.  There are special ticket offers through Atlanta CityPass and Military Appreciation.

We were going to go after our visit to the Georgia Aquarium, but the kids were done with walking so we decided to wait and go back the next morning.  I liked going first thing in the morning because it wasn’t crowded so it made it easy to enjoy.

When you first enter you get to try a coke of your choice.  This could be Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, or the reduced-calorie Coca-Cola Life.  Next, you’ll walk into the “Loft” where you are surrounded by various coke artifacts and they do a little coke trivia. Then, you go into “Coca Cola Theater” where you watch a presentation, “Moments of Happiness,” before exploring the museum. The presentation is sort of like an extended commercial, but one that pulls on your heartstrings and makes you smile. The thing that makes this work is that Coca-Cola is more than just a drink brand.  They’ve positioned themselves as a part of our society and life.  The presentation you watch further sets you up for this as you see Coca-Cola intertwined with milestone moments in people’s lives.

As you leave the theater you walk into a bigger area where you’ll have the option of getting a picture with the Coca-Cola Bear and can see the various areas that there are to explore.

Coke Branding

I love the Coca-Cola branding and that it is more than just a soft drink.  This quote above regarding the bottle says so much about the power of branding.

Here you’ll get as close as you can to the secret Coke formula.  You’ll also see how competitors tried to copy the Coca-Cola success, how the formula has been kept secret as well as have some fun with a virtual tastemaker and bubble-izer!

This takes you through some fun Coke history.  There’s an 1880’s soda fountain, a 1939 Deliver Truck and more.  You can see how coke used to be mixed, as well as other milestones such as sponsorship of the Olympic Games. There are over 1,000 original coke artifacts in this exhibit!

This area showcases what it is like in the bottling plant.  It uses some of the same equipment but runs much slower so that it is easier for you to see the process that they go through.

Here, you can write letters about a special memory that involved coke.  There’s the option to write it out on paper or do it electronically as well.  You can create your own virtual coke bottle wall art that you can send to your email. The kids had a blast with this.  Also in the Pop Culture Gallery, you’ll be able to see the original American Idol Red Couch.   I’m a big Kelly Clarkson and Carrie underwood fan, so this was pretty exciting to me.

Perfect Pauses Theater

Take a break and watch some the best of Coca-Cola advertising throughout the years.  It shows how Coca-Cola has been expressed in different languages and cultures through various tv commercials around the world.

4-D Theater

Here, you take a journey around the world looking for the secret formula.  There are 3D glasses, moving seats and other special effects. There is an option of non-moving seats in the rear of the theater as well.

Taste it!

Here you can taste Coca-Cola products from around the world.  This is where I personally am convinced they have the best tasting Coke in the world.   I’m the kind of person that likes lots of ice with my Coke.  Here though, you don’t need it.  It’s so good just right out of the fountain.

Coca Cola Store

As you leave, you walk through the Coca-Cola store.  There is a ton of adorable things here to check out.  Even if you don’t buy it, it’s still fun to look at the offerings.  The kids and I did leave with matching Coca-Cola Bear shirts.

The World of Coca-Cola is less like a museum and more like a Disney of Coca-Cola lovers.  There’s so much to see and interactive things to do it’s fun for kids and adults alike.  Coke and Atlanta just seem to go together, and it’s the perfect time to share some moments of happiness with the family.

Walt Disney World Resort Categories

Planning a Walt Disney Resort vacation can be overwhelming!  There’s a lot of options when it comes to staying on site and you want to make sure that you pick the right one.  No worries though!  This post is to help you research on what the differences are in the different hotel categories, then this post is for you.  While any Disney hotel you choose to stay at is going to give you the top-notch Disney customer service that they are known and loved for, the size of your room and resort layouts can vary in the different categories.

All About Disney World Resort Categories

Disney World Resort Vacation

All hotels include:

These items are included in all Walt Disney World Hotels regardless of category level.

  • Magic Bands
  • A pool- some of the coolest hotel pools you’ll see at a hotel!
  • Retail Shop
  • Mini-fridge in room
  • Extra Magic Hours
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Complimentary Transportation

Disney Resort Categories and What They mean

Value Resorts:

The Value Resort Categories inlclude

  • Standard Size: 260 sqft
  • Fun, bright, kid-friendly themed with large icons
  • Double Beds Standard
  • Food Courts and pizza delivery but no table service restaurants
  • Spread out
  • Rooms open to outside corridors
  • Art of Animation has mostly suites, a larger food court and their standard rooms are 277 sqft.
  • Bus Transportation to all parks and Downtown Disney
  • Themed Pool

These resorts offer big bright themes and character images throughout the hotels.  If you are going to be spending the majority of your time at the park and just need a place to sleep then this is probably ideal.  My favorite value resort is the Art of Animation.  The themed rooms are adorable, the only downside is the resort is quiet spread out. Check out my post on Disney Story Rooms for more on the bright themes and character images!

Moderate Resorts:

The Moderate Resort Categories include

  • Standard Size: 314 sqft
  • Beautiful themes, more subtle themes than the Value Resorts.
  • Standard Queen beds
  • Lush landscaping
  • Table Service Restaurant, Food Court, Pizza Delivery
  • Main feature pool (with waterslide) and other quiet pools
  • On-Site Recreation options
  • Spread out layout
  • Caribbean Beach Resort- 340 sqft
  • Riverside and Caribbean Beach can accommodate up to 5 people
  • Themed Rooms available at Caribbean Beach and Riverside

These resorts offer a little of an upgrade in the resort decor.  My favorite Moderate Resort is  Gran Destino Towers at Coronado Springs.  It feels more like a deluxe resort.  I also LOVE Port Orleans- Riverside and their Royal Rooms but depending on how many kids there are and their ages the rooms can feel a little cramped.

Deluxe Resorts:

The Deluxe Resort Categories include

  • Standard Size: 437 sqft
  • Impeccable Theming with lobbies and gift shops
  • Queen Beds Standard, pull out sofa beds
  • Rooms open to inside corridors
  • Table Service Restaurant (Including 1 upscale option) and Quick Service Restaurants
  • Main pool with water slide and other quiet pools
  • Accommodate up to 5 people in a standard room
  • Onsite gym, salon and valet parking available

Although it is more, for families of 4+, the deluxe resorts offer you more room for your stuff and typically also offer a sofa bed.  It’s not a big deal for everyone but for us it makes a big difference.  The Magic Kingdom deluxe resorts offer the benefit of being right at the park which is so helpful when you have little ones and such a stress reliever.  My favorite deluxe resort is the Polynesian, followed by the Wilderness Lodge which is typically better priced and easier to find a room at.  All of the Magic Kingdom deluxe resorts are nice and I can’t say I have a complaint about any of them.  Check out our stay at the Contemporary Resort.

Staying in a Walt Disney World Resort Story Room

Part of the fun of staying on a resort at Walt Disney World is that the fun doesn’t stop when you leave the park.  While all the resorts have their own touch of Disney Magic, the ones below are known as Disney “Story Rooms” giving you the full immersion into all things Disney!  The current story rooms are located in Value or Moderate category Disney World Resorts.

Art of Animation

Here, you’ll be surrounded by some of your favorite stories!

The Little Mermaid Standard Rooms at the Art of Animation is definitely cute, and any Little Mermaid fan will love it! Throughout the resort, there are giant characters (including Cars, Lion King, and Finding Nemo).  It can feel a little spread out but there’s always something cool to look at right around the corner!

This is one of the first rooms that we stayed in at Walt Disney World with the kids.  In part, because my daughter loved Ariel.   The rooms are colorful and fun.

Caribbean Beach Resort

Pirate Rooms- These rooms make you feel as though you’ve set sail!  They include ship-themed beds and other swashbuckling touches from light fixtures to special artwork.  The Caribbean Beach Resort is considered to be a moderate resort.

Port Orleans Riverside

Royal Guest Rooms-These rooms are fitting for a Prince or Princess!  These rooms have custom drapes, linens, ornately decorated beds and headboards that glitter with a fiber optic “fireworks” display.

The lawn is incredible and picture-perfect.  There are different areas to the resort including the Mansion rooms.

Letter on table in Port Orleans Royal Room

On the table in the rooms are letters (part of the table decor, not something you can actually pick up) that is a welcome note from Princess Tiana.

The bathroom sink area is separated by curtains, that feel very “royal” and add to the theme of the room.

Port Orleans Riverside ‘Royal Guest Rooms’ is by far one of my favorites.  The headboards are absolutely amazing and you feel as though you are staying in a palace room.  They have fiber optic lights inside that cause them to be animated with fireworks and fireflies.   The resort grounds feature the Sassagoula River, bridges and lush green lawns.  It’s truly amazing and feels like you’ve walked into a story.  The resort transports you to a new place and is pretty even to just go out for a walk.

Visiting the Georgia Aquarium

Family Fun at the Georgia Aquarium

Visiting the Georgia Aquarium!

The Georgia Aquarium is widely regarded as one of the best. Located in Atlanta, it has a capacity of approximately 10 million gallons of water!  According to WorldAtlas.com, it is the largest aquarium in the world.  They are also currently doing an expansion which will increase that size (it does not disrupt your visit).

As you enter, your journey starts with having a commemorative photo taken.  It is snapped super fast, so if you are possibly interested in getting this photo make sure everyone is paying attention and ready (those with small kids are rolling their eyes right now- I know).

After the photo, you walk through to the atrium where you can see the different sections of the aquarium. There are no paper maps. Apparently, they save “millions” each year by not printing them.  One of the workers there suggested we take a picture of the large map to use on our phones. There is also an app that you can download as well (although the person didn’t mention that).

There are lots of sights and sounds to see here that includes giant aquariums (of course), touch tanks, shows and more.

Ocean Voyager

Ocean voyager Georgia aquarium

In the Ocean Voyager, you walk through a 100 ft tunnel and can view sea life overhead and beside you. It’s amazing! This was one of the kid’s favourites as they can see the various sea life large and small all around them!

Tropical Diver

Tropical Diver

The Tropical Diver is a Pacific barrier reef habitat and one of the largest living reef exhibits in the United States.  In the Tropical Diver area, you’ll walk through “Jelly Alley” where you will see various kinds of jellyfish.

Cold Water Quest

Cold water Quest at Georgia Aquariu

Here, you’re able to see Beluga whales, sea otters and African penguins and more.  One of the kid’s favourites were the Japanese spider crabs.

California Sea Lions at SunTrust Pier 225

You can catch the Sea Lion show where the trainers and Sea Lions (with the occasional seal) put on an adorable show for all.  It’s educational and fun!  You can’t take any pictures during the show as it is a distraction to the animals and trainers, which sort of stinks but at the same time it allows you to fully focus on the show.  They also tell some stories of the rescue of some of the stars shows.  While it can be kind of sad (but humorous at the same time) it is great conversation starters to talk about the environment and animals with kids.

Dolphin Celebration

Dolphin celebration at Georgia Aquarium

Another must-see show at the Georgia Aquarium is the dolphin show.  These animals are amazing and talented!  You’ll want to be conscious that rows 1-10 are considered to be splash zones so beware!  We skipped the splash zone sections and went up a little higher for a better view. The show is very entertaining and again educational.  Prior to the show the host asks questions and does some trivia to make the wait go a little faster.  There are no pictures once the show starts, so if you want any pictures of what the theatre looks like you will need to take them beforehand.

A Fun Visit That Is Definitely Worthwhile

We had arrived at the aquarium at 9am, and within an hour, they started to get busy.  We decided to get some lunch around 11:30, this is the one thing I’d recommend doing before you go or waiting to eat until after you leave. It was pricey, and in all honesty, not very great.  We left the aquarium just before 1pm.  There were parts of it that we skipped and other parts where you could possibly spend a little longer but my youngest is the ‘ok, I saw it, what’s next’ type.  My oldest, who’s eight could have spent an hour watching the sea otters (I can’t blame her, they’re pretty cute!).

Overall, it was a lot of fun and I think people of all ages would enjoy it. Definitely, something I’d recommend putting on my must-see list if visiting Atlanta!

Know Before You Go!

Want To Better Understand Yourself and Others?

What is The Enneagram?

What’s your Enneagram type

The word stems from the Greek word ennea (nine) and grammos (a written symbol).  You just pictured the dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding didn’t you?

Enneagram My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Back to the question- The nine-pointed Enneagram symbol is used to represent nine distinct strategies for relating to one’s self, others and the world.   Each one of these types has a different pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that comes from a deeper inner motivation or view.

How does The Enneagram Relate to Me?

I find it absolutely fascinating that answering a few questions I can get insight on my deeper inner thoughts and feelings.  To put it differently, I can better understand the answers to why I do things, feel things in situations.  It’s not that the test told me I was something that I didn’t know, it is that it said here are your tendencies; this is where you have strengths and this is your weakness.

Once you understand your Enneagram type, you can then study other people’s and how you relate to them.  What you perceive one way someone else does totally different.  It can help you see it from their point of view.

Do you ever find yourself feeling like you’re being held back from creating the life you want because of fear and self-doubt? Feeling like you want to improve but don’t know where or how to begin? The Enneagram can help you understand and create a roadmap that best works for you to reach your goals and gain confidence.  That being said, it’s not an excuse.  “Oh well, I’m this way  because I’m a (insert Enneagram Type).”  Once you understand the type there are ways and methods to help you learn how to best strengthen those areas of weakness.

How I found Enneagram Personality Test

It’s funny how scary accurate it can be.  My sister had taken the test online and told me about it so I decided to give it a try. Because it nailed my personality, it also allowed me to look at the other types and relate them to people in my life which gave me a better understanding of the best methods of communication with those people.

My Top 3 types were: Type 5, Type 3, and Type 6.   My wings were 5w4 and 5w6.

Type 5 EnneagramType 3 Enneagram

Type 6 Enneagram

Test Online

There are various test out there, I’ve taken a couple and they gave me the same conclusions.  The ones that I used were free.  There’s The FAST Enneagram Testas well as Your Enneagram Coach.  There is also a paid test ($10) through Enneagram Institute.

The Nine Types

  1. The Reformer- the rational and idealistic type, principled, purposeful, self-controlled.
  2. The Helper- the caring and interpersonal type, generous, people-pleasing
  3. The Achiever (or Motivator)-the success oriented and pragmatic type, adaptable, excelling
  4. The Creative (or Individualist)- the sensitive and withdrawn type, dramatic, temperamental
  5. The Investigator (or Thinker)- the intense and cerebral type, innovative, perceptive
  6. The Loyalist (or Skeptic)- the committed and security oriented type, responsible, engaging,
  7. The Enthusiast (or Generalist)- the extroverted and spontaneous type, versatile, acquisitive
  8. The Challenger (or Leader)- the powerful and dominating type, self-confident, decisive
  9. The Peacemaker- the easy going and self-effacing type, reassuring, complacent, receptive.

It’s common to see some of yourself in all nine types, although one should stand out as be the closest to yourself.

Enneagram Wings

Not only do you have your main type, but it has been found that usually you will have characteristics of one of the types that lie adjacent to your main type.  This is known as a “wing.” For example, you may be a type 5 and have a wing of a 4 or 6. This would be shown as a “5w4” and “5w6.” If you do not have a dominant wing, it is said that the wings are balanced.

Welcome to Kindergarten, It’s OK Mama

Welcome to Kindergarten feature

You take a deep breath and then exhale as you look at the enrollment paper for Kindergarten.  Has it really been five years?  Really?  “Wasn’t I just sleep deprived because you were nursing every two hours?” you think to yourself.  Now suddenly, it feels as though you’re on a rollercoaster with twist, turns, and drops that make you feel like you’ll lose your lunch. Slow down Mama.

kindergarten

Kindergarten is exciting and scary all at the same time.  This is your baby’s chance to make friends, learn new things, and grow. It’s scary because it causes us to question ourselves and abilities.  Did I teach you what you need to know to be prepared? Did you get too much screen time? Was I too strict with the screen time and now you won’t relate to something the other kids bond over?  Why didn’t I read to you more? Are you going to sit and listen to the teacher? Lord, please don’t let them call me. All of these things or questions like them will probably go through your mind.  Trust me, there is a wide variety of emotions you may find yourself going through.

The list for kindergarten changes it seems every year.  The current trend seems they are expected to know their colors, numbers to 10 and how to write their name.  You see the list and feel overwhelmed. Maybe you’ve tried your absolute best to teach them to write their name and it’s just not happening.  I’ve been there!  I tried, bought handwriting books, did everything I could think of to encourage them to do it and – negative. It was a fight and even then it didn’t turn out. As life would have it, they go to school and come home with their name written on paper. ( <–THIS SERIOUSLY HAPPENED)“Look at what I did Mommy!” they say proudly.  You aren’t sure if you want to hug them or go scream into a pillow but ultimately, you are happy they did it.

Keep that in mind as you prepare your little one for kindergarten.  Some lessons don’t look like they are sticking but they are. They are getting it.  Consistency and love are key to this journey that you are on.  Easier said than done, but it’s true.

I was so so sad when my kids started kindergarten.  It was especially hard with my youngest.  I had to put on my happy face and show my excitement thought because I didn’t want them to dread it or think they should feel bad for growing up. I wanted them to look forward to new adventures, even though it was hard for me too.  My kids are pretty attached to me, for instance, I walk to the garage and within thirty seconds, one of them is looking for me like an alarm has gone off.  When it came to school though, they were like “peace out!”  and confidently walked in to take it on.   I was a little mad (hey I’m just being honest) but so proud at the same time.

Preparing For Kindergarten

kids learning

Here are some things that you can help your child with prior to and during Kindergarten to help them along.

Responsibilities for Kids 5+

A great way to help your child prepare for Kindergarten is to give them some responsibilities.  This helps them in being helpful, following directions and boost their self-esteem when they look at their accomplishments.

  • Some ideas may include
  • Hanging up their towel
  • Cleaning their room
  • Feed pets

Developing and Improving Fine Motor Skills

This is the smaller movements that occur in the wrist, hands, fingers, feet and toes.  It involves things such as picking up objects and writing carefully. Helping a child develop fine motor skills is an important aspect to their learning.  It’s as easy as giving them crayons and paper to draw on.  Let them practice writing, drawing simple pictures or self-portraits. Even just scribbling around on paper.

Understood.org has 6 Fine Motor Skills Activities for Kidsthat includes fun things like playing with putty!

Developing and Improving Gross Motor Skills

There is a Washington Post article on getting your child ready for kindergartenthat is really good.  It mentions giving them plenty of unstructured outdoor play.  Allowing them to run, jump, imagine and create.  It helps them to understand their bodies and abilities, practicing balance as well as gaining strength.  A positive side effect of this is, they’ll probably sleep well at night with that too!

Parenttoolkit.com has some great tips on gross motor skills for kindergarten.

Practicing Math and Numbers

Counting as you go up stairs, or how many m&m’s they get are fun ways to introduce numbers and counting to them.  You can show them the concepts of addition and subtraction and it doesn’t feel like ‘work’ to them.

Encouraging and Fostering Independence

Bathroom Stalls

Things like shutting the bathroom door/bathroom stall so they can go potty.  I’m not saying send them in a public restroom alone; I’m saying let them go into the stall itself and wait of the other side.  You’d be surprised at how many kids have no idea they need to shut the stall.  Then again, it’s just not something they’ve ever had to do so they don’t necessarily think about it.

Opening foods

Let them proactive opening their own chips, or fruit snacks.  They will be in a cafeteria full of other kids and while I’m sure there will be adult supervision when you have four classes of kids to help someone is going to get stuck waiting.  It’s good to help them learn before hand.

Putting Things Away

I totally get that sometimes, it is just easier and faster to do it yourself.  It is still good though to take the time and have them put away their things that have been taken out.  It’s also a good a idea to remind them of things such as pushing in a chair when they leave the table.

More Resources To Help With Preparing For Kindergarten

For those of you who have kindergartners starting next year, there’s a great site Teachmama.com that has an article on summertime prep for Kindergarten(which of course can be used anytime).  It includes a lot of really great resources and “do this by” suggestions!

Another great post is from themeasuredmom.com on Kindergarten Readinesswhere she explains it is all about balance and fun ways to tie in learning!

Feeling Fancy at the New Gran Destino Tower

Feeling Fancy at Disney’s Gran Destino Tower

A Luxury Feel at Moderate Prices

The Gran Destino Tower is the newest part of Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort.  The tower is the new front entrance of the hotel and feels much more like a deluxe resort than a moderate resort.  We had previously stayed at the Coronado Springs Resort about six years ago and I swore it off, it was by far my least liked option.  However, we had seen some pictures of the renovated resort online and decided to try it. I am so glad we did!

The outside of the hotel amazed the kids with my eight-year-old commenting, “It looks so fancy!”

Disney did a fantastic job of blending the modern, contemporary design and old-world traditions as they tell stories of adventurous world travelers, innovative artist, and enchanting storytellers. There are incredible details throughout the hotel.    The Gran Destino is actually inspired by a short film that was created by Walt and famed artist Salvador Dali,  “Destino” which they show in the lobby.  It’s very abstract artsy and makes more sense once you’ve seen the hotel.

For our stay, we decided to try out the resort’s Club Level which until now was exclusive to Disney Deluxe Resorts.  The tower’s club is called ‘Chronos Club’.  It’s staffed by cast members who assist with planning and includes a continental breakfast, snacks, appetizers at night and desserts.

Upon check-in, a cast member walked us over to the elevators and up to the Chronos Club so that they could show us the lounge.  The cast member that assisted us was Charmin, he was very helpful and kind!  I love that cast members take the time to engage the kids too and then listen to them as they sometimes ramble on.

The club level had a chest of games and toys that kids could play with while in the lounge.  It was a rainy weekend so they came in very handy!  Charmin had suggested the “Disney Meme” game as a fun one to play so when we went back later that night we decided to give it a try- and he was so right!  It was hilarious!  It’s even more fun with little kids who can’t read yet because sometimes it winds up being perfect.

All of the cast members we came in contact with at the Chronos Club were amazing.  One of our favorites was Susan, who so graciously listened to and interacted with the kids as they shared their favorite Disney movies as well as tales of school starting soon.  She even remembered us the next day to ask how our time at the pool had been. I can honestly say before we left the kids had definitely made friends with her and hopefully we’ll see her the next time too.

The hotel grounds are beautiful and of course, Disney manicured.  The pool has one of the longest Disney resort slides; “The Jaguar” which includes a Jaguar over top of you as you go down was a lot of fun. It feels like you are on vacation in a far-away place, not just Florida.

Beside the pool, there is also a playground, some outdoor games, and an arcade.  The kids enjoyed running around the playground.  One night after a pool visit, we decided to go into the arcade and check it out.  The kids had a blast playing the various games.

Three Bridges- Villa del Lago

Sitting at Villa del Lago in the center of the lake, Three Bridges is a restaurant where the storytellers meet and share meals and stories. It is a casual, outdoor, open-air lounge serving Spanish inspired meals.  It is said to have been inspired by the dreamers, adventurers, and explorers. It’s definitely a cool atmosphere, although I’ll be honest that the kids weren’t totally impressed with the food itself. As with the resort itself though, the restaurant has special details woven throughout of the storytelling of these dreamers, adventurers, and explorers.

A Fun Stay at Disney’s Coronado Springs Gran Destino Tower

It was a fantastic, fun stay at Gran Destino Tower.  We had previously stayed at Coronado Springs about six years ago and I swore it off, but with the updates I have to say, I’m pretty confident we’ll be back again!

Rapunzel’s Breakfast at Trattoria Al Forno (Walt Disney World)

Rapunzel Breakfast at Trattoria Al Forno

One of the easiest ways to get character interaction at Disney World is through Character Breakfast.  You get to east, characters come around to your table and take pictures as well as sign autograph books.  It’s a lot of fun.

As I’ve mentioned before we are all BIG Rapunzel fans.  Many times when we go down we visit Trattoria Al Forno’s Bon Voyage Adventure’s Breakfast also known to my family as the Rapunzel Breakfast.  Also at the breakfast is Ariel and Prince Eric and of course Flynn Ryder (Eugene).

Trattoria Al Forno is located on Disney’s Boardwalk near the Boardwalk Resort.

The menu has changed some from the last time we were there for kids, (a very good change) where they can choose an entree and then two sides.  Previously the steak was part of the Royal Breakfast and came with eggs in the shape of a fish.  My kids aren’t fans of eggs so it was always a big deal to have them on the plate (they were a weird texture too).

At the table, they bring you a small cast iron frying pan (Tangeld Movie Reference) filled with pastries.  My favorite is the Rapunzel Sun and the confetti muffins.  The frying pan is refillable also. Be warned though, it’s very easy to fill up on these delicious pastries and be too full for breakfast!

The sun is a crispy pastry with powdered sugar on it.  It’s delicious!

The kids always try and fill up on these muffins.  They are sweet and tasty but defnitley something I have to limit if I want them to eat their actual breakfast.

The kids totally love steak for breakfast.  I love that the steak they bring isn’t fatty and we basically just have to cut it up and let them eat it.  For their breakfast they do just stick with the steak and sausage which may not look like a whole lot but it’s more than filling for them.

I love the breakfast food there.  I’m not much of a breakfast person so that says a lot.   The Tangled Eggs are my favorite!! It’s eggs with basil, and a Sunday gravy (marina like sauce) with seasoned potatoes.  It is absolutely amazing!

The Characters at Trattoria Al Forno

One of the best parts of breakfast at Trattoria Al Forno is the characters.  As I mentioned earlier, characters come around to each table, are very chatty, take pictures and sign autographs.  This makes it so much easier than waiting in lines to see them at the park sometimes.  Plus it gives you some time to sit and relax while you wait on them to come around.

Flynn Rider at Rapunzel Breakfast

TIP! Did you know that you can ask Flynn what’s in his satchel??  It’s pretty interesting!  I won’t spoil the surprise!

They have an “Adventurer’s Parade” where the kids line up and follow the characters around the dining room dancing and twirling napkins.  My kids always have a ball with this.

Another great thing about this breakfast is that it is outside the park so even if you won’t be going to one of the parks you can still enjoy seeing the characters- bonus win!
