February is Heart Month
February is heart month! My daughter has been participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. (If you’d like to donate you can through this link!) This is the school’s first year participating with this particular charitable cause. She’s learned a lot about her hear and heart health. In turn, we all have become more aware of our heart as well. The month is almost over, but these are still great tips to apply all during the year.
Your heart is a vital part of your body and it’s important to keep it healthy. As my daughter so blatantly pointed out to me… without your heart you aren’t going to live. Oh, the words of six-year-olds. (See her video here)
Nourish Interactive has some great healthy tips and printables for kids to help encourage a healthy heart.
Heart.org has some great tips on how to know if you’re keeping your heart healthy:
- Avoid smoking and using tobacco products.
- Be physically active every day.
- Eat a heart-healthy diet.
- Keep a healthy weight.
- Keep your blood pressure healthy.
- Keep your total cholesterol healthy.
- Keep your blood sugar healthy.
Heart.org also has a great resource- Simple Cooking with Heart that includes kid-friendly recipes and talking points to discuss with your kids.
It’s so important to encourage healthy habits in our kids. I’ll be the very first to admit to you that before kids I didn’t have the healthiest of habits, but they’ve definitely inspired me to change so that they will grow healthy and strong.
