I Had A Dream
“I had a dream that we were born, a generation to behold.” I love Kelly Clarkson, I have since Idol. She’s an incredibly gifted vocalist and writer. She’s an incredibly strong woman. She has shown she knows how to go toe to toe with whomever she needs to and she won’t compromise herself to do it. To top it all of, she doesn’t really care about your opinion because she knows who she is.
Piece By Piece
I was busy tonight working on some school work and had the tv on and switched it over to Amazon Music. After listening to the “Greatest Showman” soundtrack like 5 times I decided to change it up a little and searched Kelly Clarkson. In scrolling through her albums I selected “Piece by Piece,” while I’ve heard bits and pieces I don’t think I’ve ever sat down to listen to this particular album other than “Heartbeat Song” and “Piece By Piece,” I have no idea why.
If You Wanna Lead, Be A Leader
The catchy beat of this song caught me from the get-go and made me pause to pay attention.
If you wanna lead, be a leader If you wanna dream, be a dreamer Climb to the top of that mountain and scream it #kellyclarkson #strongwomen #BE #littlemissblog Click To TweetA couple lines later, it gets to this lyric-
Careful now, girl, with them Jezebel ways
Crown on your head, but you’re queen of cliches
Little one playin’ with the big boys now
Hope you’re ready when it comes back around
I had to stop and back it up because “them Jezebel ways” definitely made me stop and listen to what she was trying to say.
I was blown away by the lyrics and how powerful they are. I was baffled that I hadn’t heard this before. It makes its point, no dancing around it, no sugar coating, just straight-forward Kelly Clarkson.
The Footprints That You Leave
Remember that the footprints you’re leaving, will
Tell us all who you really are
It’s too bad you can’t see what you’re worth
Spreadin’ your legs ‘stead of usin’ your words
Character is shown by the things that we do
The one thing you’re never gonna hide is the truth
‘Cause anyone can tell when you’re sellin’ out
And anyone can fly when they’re fallin’ down
THIS. It’s one of those songs that you think, I could have written that!! It’s as if someone got into your head and organized your thoughts into song.
Character is Shown by the Things That We Do
This is the lesson my mom drilled into us growing up. That our character is shown by what we do. That a good name will get you through doors that may not otherwise open.
It’s important to know your worth, because if you don’t how will anyone else? The footprints that you leave- will be what reflects who you really are. There’s quote from the television show The Blacklist that I love from Raymond Reddington-
We are human. We make mistakes, it’s part of life and learning and is absolutely inevitable. If you’re not making mistakes, you might want to evaluate what you’re doing because it’s the only way to grow. The difference is, you should never set out with a wrong purpose.
A Generation to Behold
I supposed everyone does, but I remember as a little girl expecting greatness. I have high expectations of myself and of other people. It’s my blessing and my curse. Someone once told me I’d never make it in management because I expect too much of people. My reply was, at least you’d know I had top-notch people with me.
I’m a big believer in “shoot for the moon, if you don’t reach it you’ll at least fall among the stars.” Don’t get me wrong, I think that this generation has accomplished a lot and it’s far from over. However, I think sometimes instead of knowing our worth, instead of being the “authority” on a matter we fall into the very trap we think we’re overcoming.
Let’s be the authority (“the power to influence others, especially because of one’s commanding manner or one’s recognized knowledge about something.”) on what we do and the positions we hold. We owe to the women who have fought for rights before us and for the ones coming behind us to show them they are not less, they are equal and more.
We’re moving beyond “here’s your one chance Fancy” (I love you Reba!) to ‘this girl is on fire.”
Lighting Fires With Our Words
Lighting fires with our words
Instead of useless smoke that blurs
The lines of right and wrong
Expression that lives on
An army with a song
That lingers when we’re gone
I had a dream
We’ve learned a lot in the last couple years I think. Now, it’s time that we take that and we use those lessons to move forward. No judging or finger pointing, just moving forward with what we know better now. Let this generation leave its mark that will linger long after we’re gone.
Lighting fires with our words, instead of useless smoke that blurs.
May that be our goal. Just as the lyrics say, anyone can sell when they are selling out.
I don’t want to be a ‘sell out.’ I want to be able to at the end of the day look at myself and know that I was true to who I am and that even with mistakes and flaws I’m growing and moving forward making a difference.
Here’s to the strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.
I want to hear about the strong women in your life and that have inspired you. Tell us about them in the comments!
