St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of St. Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland.  He was actually born in Britan but kidnapped and taken to Ireland.  The holiday has also become a celebration of all things Irish.  Cities such as New York City who has a high Irish population has had a St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1762. The first St. Patricks’s Day celebration was in Boston in 1737.

About St. Patrick’s Day

The Color Green and St. Patrick’s Day

St Patrick's Day
Blue was traditionally the color associated with St. Patrick, but somewhere along the way, green became the commonly connected color.  The shamrock, which is the Irish national plant is also a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day.
The Chicago River is dyed green every year for St. Patrick’s Day and other landmarks often get into the spirit as well.  The Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House light up green.
