Committing to Living Life-The Last Lecture

Filed Under: Wisdom January 14, 2019

Committing to living life

The Last Lecture

Recently during some school work I was introduced to this lecture.  It’s both inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.  Really, that’s how life is though if you look at the bigger picture.  That is why it’s important to focus on the inspiring parts and build upon it so that great things happen and we give future generations the ability to start of better than the one before.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn9L4CxAaQY

Randy Pausch is giving what is typically a “hypothetical last lecture.”   Traditionally the last lecture is the lecture a professor would give to students if hypothetically they knew they were going to die and it would be their last lecture.   The thing was, Randy was dying of pancreatic cancer and had only months to live.  He openly admits that this stinks and that he doesn’t like it.  After all, he has three little kids at home.  Although he was pursing medical treatments and doing what he could, Pausch also knew that he didn’t deal the cards.  He didn’t want pity; he wanted to focus on life and how to live.

Pausch talked about his life beginning with childhood and experiences that he has lived.  One of my favorite quotes is- “if you don’t achieve your dreams, you can still get a lot by trying for it. There’s an expression I love: Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.”

Lessons Learned From Randy Pausch And The Last Lecture

  1. Don’t discount the experience. There really is a building block there to get you where you need to go.
  2. Childhood Dreams. It’s important to look back at where you came from to understand where you want to go and how to get there. Sometimes, when you do, you’ll see that you’re actually further along or have more experience than you thought.
  3. Remember the importance of people over things. Pausch tells the story of a new car and the first time his niece and nephew ride in it.It’s important to take care of things, yes, but it’s always more important to remember the value of people over the value of things.
  4. Decide if you want to be an Eeyore or a Tigger. Do you want to always see the negative side of things or be optimistic? Don’t wallow- move forward.
  5. Tell the truth. Always tell the truth. It is a very difficult thing to do at times, but your word is your bond.  There may come a day when all you have is your word.   Everybody messes up, it’s better to tell on yourself than be told on.
  6. When you screw up, apologize. Own what you did, and know how you are going to improve.
  7. Show gratitude. I love the story that Pausch tells about taking students to Disneyland. It was because they had worked so hard and he wanted to treat them on his own nickel. When you’re gracious, you’ll get a lot farther in life than if you feel entitled.
  8. Complaining and Whining don’t solve a problem. Pausch tells a very interesting story about Jackie Robinson and his contract.  Looking now, the fact this clause was in his contract was absurd and appalling.    The point though, is that you can stand there and complain or you can spend your time playing the game as hard as you can.  Until the haters ask if you’re hiring.

It’s up to us as individuals to live life.  No, we can’t always pick our circumstances but we can choose our strategy.  As a new year begins, it’s a reminder of a fresh start and deciding where we want to go from this point.  Live it to the fullest.  Live it well.  When you do, you’ll start to see dreams finding you.

This new year, let’s commit to living life fully!

Remembering Kate Spade and Her Influence

Filed Under: Mommy, Wisdom December 31, 2018

Kate.

I’m a big Kate Spade fan. I’ve never been one that has truly loved handbags.  Yes, I went through a phase where I liked some knock off Louie Vuitton ones (thank you Jessica Simpson) but as far as really loving a handbag or paying more than $40 for one, not so much.  However, Kate Spade is the one brand that I LOVE handbags from.   I don’t just love the handbags though; I love the pens, cups, notecards- all of it.  The branding is amazing.   I love the colors.  The small extra touches; whether it’s a bow or a cheeky saying hidden inside.   The Kate Spade brand inspires women to be fun, silly and sophisticated all at the same time while it stays functional and affordable.  I cannot say enough about how amazing the branding of Kate Spade is.

Kate Spade Quote She is Playful Clever

In 2002 she was named a Glamour Woman of the Year.  In the article she said “If you’re as honest and fair as you can be, not only in business but in life, things will work out,I hope that people remember me not just as a good businesswoman but as a great friend—and a heck of a lot of fun.”  Kate always had the best quotes.  It is a testament to the brand that the quotes have carried on long after Kate herself stepped away.

Embed from Getty Images

I admire Kate Spade, as a mom who decided to step away from her namesake brand to raise her baby.  That’s not an easy thing to do with a career of any type, but add into that it’s your namesake and wow.  It’s something that I can completely understand doing, especially when you’ve dreamed of having this child.  She seemed so happy and content.  In 2016, her daughter was a little older and she was able to get back into the fashion industry (to which still took a second seat to her family) by introducing Frances Valentine.    The Frances Valentine brand is different than Kate Spade New York, but similar in the functionality and side of fun.  It would have seemed she had accomplished it all.

In June 2018, when Kate (who had not been part of the Kate Spade brand for over a decade) took her own life, it was not only saddening but completely confusing as well.   This woman, who built this brand, who laid the foundations for everything this brand was- ended her own life.  For us on the outside, who in fact didn’t know her on a personal level (even as much as we felt we did), it is difficult to process how someone who built such a solid brand could have felt the exact opposite. Maybe it’s in part due to the fact that I’ve studied marketing and branding and know the types of things that go into it and how hard you work to create your ‘personal brand’ that I’m stumped. The truth is, you never know someone’s road or what battle they are fighting.   My heart breaks that her life ended in this way.  For her, her family; including a little girl who I pray for often.

The death of Kate Spade is a reminder that even when you have money and success that doesn’t make you immune to anxiety and depression.  It’s something I think we all need to remember. Sometimes we look and think someone has it all, but inside; we’re not so different.  There’s an old Amy Grant song with the lyric “We are all the same it seems/ Behind the Eyes/ Broken promises and dreams/ in good disguise” that reminds me of that fact.    People came from everywhere to talk about the inspiration that she had been on their life. Some that didn’t even realize she had stepped away from the Kate Spade New York brand (to which, again, is a testament to the branding).  The people that knew her honestly only had good things to say about her.  She was all the good that the Kate Spade brand was.  I think her quote was still spot on and I’m sure that people will always remember her as honest and fun.

I choose to remember the happy part of Kate Spade.  The encouraging, bright, cheerful part.  There is now a sad part there as well, but if we use that to open conversations and help people when they are struggling so they know that they aren’t alone.  Let them know it’s not just them and that there’s nothing to be ashamed of.  Hopefully, it can help save others and encourage people to get help.

Church Announcements About Fussy Babies

Filed Under: Mommy November 13, 2018

The Rub Of What Is Probably Supposed To Be Helpful

If you’re the mother of a young child, we’re so glad you’re here today! We know it can be hard to get to church, sometimes it’s hard just to leave the house with all you have in tow!   During service, if your baby gets a little fussy, maybe becomes a distraction to those around you…

Hold on.  What?

“maybe becomes a distraction to those around you”

SHHH

Oh!  A distraction to those around me.  Thanks for pointing that out, because if you hadn’t- I may not have even realized it!  It was not one of the million thoughts going through my head this morning as I pushed through to even get here that my baby might be a “distraction” to someone around me. Heaven for-bid!

Can We Talk About Actual Distractions?

Can we get an announcement about that lady a row in front of me playing on Facebook while the pastor is talking?  No, she’s not new here- she’s here every week and has been for at least the past year.  What about the guy who stands in front of the stage playing air guitar…  Can we have him tone it down because, seriously, THAT is distracting.

Oh…now I’m judging. Sorry- not my intention. I just thought we had opened up some honest conversation about distractions since we were on the topic.  But no, it’s completely inappropriate for me to call all of that out but ok for you to call a mom of a little one out to make sure she knows there are appropriate “rooms” for her to be in if her baby starts distracting people.  She’s not smart enough to know if the baby is getting a little loud that she should step out, she needs you to specifically spell that out for her.

The Way Parents Of Young Children Are Treated At Church

In case it’s unclear (yes, that’s sarcasm) the way that moms with little ones get treated sometimes at church is one of those things that absolutely makes me want to scream.

When I first had my daughter, we were going to a big church and she would normally nap around the time that we went to church on Sunday mornings.   The beat of drums for some reason always helped with this and thankfully, the church definitely had drums.  So during worship, she’d fall asleep and then wake up right before the sermon was over.

The Nursery is That Way =>

The thing was, that the ushers at the church didn’t know I had this completely planned and 99% of the time it worked like a charm.  They’d stop me before I even go to the door- “The nursery is that way.” I’d smile, say ‘thank you’ and head into the sanctuary.   Listen ya’ll- church or not- my infant is not being left with a stranger (no judgment if you do, this was just me).

As she got bigger, I did attempt to take her to the nursery and the first time she went in.  After that, if I even turned to head that way she’d scream bloody murder.  So, I’d head into the sanctuary, have the ushers stop us to tell me ah-gain about the nursery.  I stopped smiling and just rolled my eyes as I found a seat.  Then, if she made the tiniest of squeaks I’d jump up and head out to a ‘waiting’ area where I could watch the sermon on tv and let her play with a toy or walk around and bounce her.  Here, she could only distract other moms with children who were distracting other people so it wasn’t a big deal.

Why Am I Showing Up Anyway?

If I were going to watch the sermon on tv though, why was I even bothering to show up to begin with? I could watch a sermon on tv at home. Not to mention that would allow me to forgo the evil usher eyes for not sending the baby to the nursery.  So you know what I did?  I quit going.

It was hard enough for me to get there.  As a first time mom, I felt insecure and bad enough about so many other things that I didn’t need this one more thing to add on to it.  I’m an issue at work if the baby is sick and I can’t come in.  I’m an issue at home because I can’t get everything done. I’m an issue in a restaurant because the baby is done and tired of sitting there while I try and finish my food (since I hadn’t eaten yet to try and feed them first).   In my mind, I was always inconveniencing someone and this drove me crazy.  I have always been a very independent person and felt like I should be able to do everything and more.   This new phase where suddenly I had to make sure that I was essentially seen and not heard was weird and I hated it.

An Article Of Hope

A few years later, I read an article on the Huffington Post titled “Dear Parents Of Young Children In Church.”  I balled my eyes out.   I realized that a lot of what I had put on myself was just that- me putting it on myself.  I wanted to believe there was importance in me pushing through.   When I read this, I now had a toddler and another baby.  I decided to try and give it another go with a church.

Giving Church Another Try

This time, the church we decided to try was held in a movie theater.  I’ll be honest, it seemed awkward at first but the people were nice and the pastor was interesting.  Not once did anyone say “The nursery is over there” as I walked in.   That was a relief, however even though nobody wants to acknowledge it when you’re the mom of a baby- you are already paranoid about bothering someone and are convinced they are all staring at you if the baby makes a peep.

My first child was two now, and she loved to go to the nursery.  They completely won her over with goldfish crackers. My baby, who was about eight months, would last through the singing before he was done.  So then, I’d sit outside the theater room on a bench letting the baby play with a toy or walking up and down the hall. I had become familiar with those in the nursery and had tried to leave the baby a couple times. I’d go in, the baby would cry and they’d say “just go it’ll be fine.”  It broke my heart but I knew a lot of times with kids that was true so I would go and stand outside that theater where I could hear.  My husband would convince me to go into the service.  It didn’t stop.  The entire time the baby would cry.   The people in the nursery wouldn’t come to get me because they didn’t want to bother me.  This was supposed to be a kind gesture but frustrated me because I didn’t want the baby to cry the entire time and then I felt bad that they had to deal with that the entire time.

Not Working Out

My husband would offer to switch off with me and take the baby out but then I was completely distracted the entire service wondering if everything was ok, wondering if I needed to go out there.  I heard none of the services on these occasions so I would just decline and tell him I’d go out with the baby.  This, was my own issues and I can see that.

Eventually, it just wasn’t worth going.  I told my husband he could go but I would stay home because not only was I not hearing anything but the theater had also started opening for movies earlier which made it all the more awkward to be sitting in the halls as people came through.

Once again, I quit.

Giving Up

It was just too much. Getting there with a one-year-old and three-year-old was a hassle.  Then, not even hearing the sermon and feeling invisible because I couldn’t ‘volunteer’ for anything so obviously I wasn’t worth knowing.   Sorry, I had two little ones that I was responsible for.  I couldn’t just leave them with someone to come help with the greeting or a clean up at someone’s house.  If I sound bitter of snappy about it, I’m still working on getting over these feelings.

A Little Bigger, A Lot Easier

Fast forward to now. Getting out of the house with two kids can still be a challenge.  They are 4 and 7.  About eight months ago we decided to give church another try after the constant hounding of my seven-year-old.  This time, we decided on a church that was currently being held in the auditorium of my old high school.  Bizarre because never in a million years did I see myself walking back into this school. My sister had been going there for a while and knew the people in the children’s area.  My youngest was not so sure at first, so we had them both put into the same class.  While they stayed there the whole service, my little one complained that the older one found a friend and ignored him.  The next week I decided to put them each in their own age group.  Again, they stayed back the entire time.  When we picked them up my little one said “I had SO much FUN!”

It was amazing. A-Maze-Za-Zing.  No crying, no complaining, happy as could be to get dropped off and excited to tell me about their experience when I picked them up.

Being There To Support Those Who Are Experiencing What You’ve Gone Through

The thing is the time period when they were really little and I was trying so hard to do the church thing absolutely burned me.   Announcements that are supposed to be helpful about a mothers’ area are infuriating to me. I think that so often as moms, we experience this time and then we get out of it.  Our kids start to go into Sunday School easily and we can sit in the service.  We forget how it felt when our kids didn’t do that and ignore the message about a special mothers’ area or how it can sometimes come across.

There’s a church, Hamburg First United Methodist in Arkansas that has these cards in their pews for parents of young children.

Pew Card For Parents of Young Children

See the full, printable card.

Being Supportive and Being Community

This.. is to me, a little more what it should be like. Let’s welcome them to the front.  Let’s teach them it’s ok to engage.  That pastor probably has kids or grandkids- don’t discount him not being able to handle it.  Yes, if a baby is crying it’s a good idea to step out.  Mostly because that baby obviously needs a minute or some adjusting and you don’t want to make them have to sit and place and deal with it.

Many times though, the feeling seems to be once you’re out, you’re out.   I get that there are churches who have created these nice, plush rooms for moms to go to and that is thoughtful.  However, where’s the sense of for her? Where is the ‘church family’ for her? For many moms, this is the time when they feel irrelevant.   Their bodies have carried a baby for (give or take a week or so) 40 weeks.  During this time, their body wasn’t really theirs.  It was the housing for this incredible human being.   Then, especially the first couple of years of that incredible human being’s life that mom’s body is used to feed and comfort that incredible human being.   Nobody cares she’s been up for 32 hours straight because that baby is teething. We’ve got things to get done and if you can’t help then just move on out of the way seems to be the thinking. Please understand, she doesn’t want you to solve anything for her.  She doesn’t want you to feel bad for her.  What she wants is for someone to look her in the eye and say “It’s tough sometimes, but what you are doing right now is making an eternal impact and it matters.”  She needs someone to say “you’re doing a good job, it’s tough sometimes but you’re doing it with grace.”

Speak life to her. Don’t stop her just to say “wow! You look tired!” that isn’t helpful or kind.  Ask how her week is going.  Offer to sit by her because you’ve got kids or grandkids (or even if you don’t but you are great with kids) and you want her to know it’s ok if there’s a fuss. It’s not bothering you or anyone else. As part of her community, you are here to support her.

An Opportunity To Love And Support

The majority of moms know when their baby needs something and they need to step out with them.  For those few times that there’s someone who doesn’t- isn’t our God big enough to still get his message across through a baby crying?  Maybe that baby crying is an opportunity to help.  Rather than finding it a nuisance maybe we should wonder if that mom who hasn’t walked out with a noisy baby is in search of something from God.  Maybe she is doing her best to push through to get it.   Instead of looking around to see where the noise is coming from we should say a prayer for comfort and peace and it never hurts to have some toddler snacks on hand. My point is, this mama is an important part of your community and right now she may be at her most vulnerable. Choose love. Choose kindness. Don’t use descriptions like ‘distraction’ or ‘disturbance’ because while it may seem innocent enough- to her, it could be what pushes her right out the door never to return.

Speak Life- The Importance Of Affirmations And Encouragement

affirmation definition

I am not the “give everybody a trophy” kind of person and sometimes I think that is what affirmations is made out to be, however, it’s not what they are.  It’s a positive assertion, a pronouncement.  Remember the phrase “you are what you think”?  This is saying that life stems from your thoughts.  Keyword- stems from.  Those thoughts then turn into words, which eventually become actions.

Power in Words

There’s a proverb in the Bible- “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Proverbs 18:21  Hence the importance of “speak life.”

What all of this means is that we have to be very careful with our words, choosing to speak only those which work towards our benefit and cultivate our highest good. The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.”

What all of this means is that we have to be very careful with our words, choosing to speak only those which work towards our benefit and cultivate our highest good. Share on X

You may have heard the phrase “your perception is your reality.”  There’s an interesting article on Medium about perception and how it creates your reality.   It boils down to this- what you think does affect your ability and how you perceive things. What you think, doesn’t stay shut up in your brain, it becomes what you speak and then how you act.

Repetition of Affirmations Quote

I’ve known absolutely brilliant people who were paralyzed by the idea that they weren’t good enough.  The would constantly speak about how they weren’t good enough.   Here’s something very important that people have to understand  about being good enough and it’s a Rocky Balboa quote:

“If you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth”

Rocky Motivation Quote

You’ve got to know your worth in order for other people to know you’re worth.  If you think you’re worth $3 an hour, there’s some cheap-o willing to pay you just that for a job that may be worth $15 an hour.   There’s nothing wrong or bad about acknowledging that you are a hard worker and that you put all of your energy into something to get the job done.

Affirmations For Kids And Adults

We recently did a school project where we put affirmations and encouraging quotes on bathroom stalls at a local elementary school.   My hope is that it encourages and lifts up a kid when they are having a rough day, or when they just need to be reminded that they are capable of amazing things.

Affirmations aren’t just for kids though.  Adults need them also.  Our brains and our thoughts play a part in our health and success.  There’s an article- Ruining My Day that has a great look at how we look at ourselves and life.

Here are some of my favorite affirmations and encouraging quotes:

I can and I will affirmation

She leaves a little sparkle kate spade encouraging quote

mother teresa encouraging quote

Dr Suess Encouraging Quote

Be Silly Be Honest Be Kind

Encouraging Quote

Jane Goodall Quote

Audrey Hepburn Impossible Quote Beauty

I understand if you’re a little skeptical reading this, but when you stop and think about the correlation of your thoughts and words in how your life is you can see the connection.   There’s an article “Why Affirmations Are Important To Your Health And Happiness” that talks even more about it.

Can you think of one successful person that says “I’m not worth what they are paying me” or “I’m really not smart”?

Speak Life

Muhammad Ali Quote I am the Greatest

I love the quote above from Muhammed Ali.  He spoke life.  He spoke that he was the greatest and worked hard and pushed himself to show he was the greatest.  You know what? It stuck.  He is still thought of as one of the greatest boxers in history.

There’s an old quote from NFL player Maurice Jones-Drew “You may be bigger, You may be stronger, But your WILL is not as great as mine.”

Understanding Failure Is Not The End Or Bad

These are the things that we ourselves need to remember and that we also need to remind our children of too.   Failing at something is inevitable.  What you do with that lesson is what counts.

Henry Ford quote on failure

This quote is one of my favorites.  It is for kids, however, adults can easily apply it to their lives as well

Be The Nice Kid quote

Investing In The Community Through A Vinyl Project At Local Elementary School

School Vinyl project- Affirmations in bathroom

It Started With Bold Week

In the business of life, we sometimes forget that we are a part of our overall community. It’s easy to do when you are already being pulled in so many different directions. This past year, we started attending a new church and during a week in August they have something called “Bold Week.”  It’s a week where several of the local churches in the community get together and go into the 6 local schools in that part of the city and they help teachers get things together- they clean, they paint, whatever is needed- they do it.  They feed teachers and administration and help them prepare for students and get the school year off on the right foot.

The goal of Bold Week is to show the community that the local church as a whole- not one denomination or another- is coming together to serve the community.   They invest into the community by serving schools which in turn serves students, which can get their school year started off on a positive step.  It can change the direction of a child’s life.

It never occurred to me that the schools might need help getting all of this together or that there may be ways that I could help serve the local school to make a positive impact.  I know the statement sounds sort of dumb- but the fact is life gets crazy and we overlook the simple things.

A Vinyl Idea

You’ve probably seen on Facebook, Pinterest, or even the internet in general school bathrooms where positive sayings and affirmations are being applied to stall doors with either paint or vinyl.  It brightens up the school bathrooms and also is there to encourage students.

I came across a post about it and thought it was brilliant.  I debated on asking my child’s school about doing it there but I wasn’t even sure if they had stalls there (or if they were individual bathrooms).  This school is not in the same community where we attend church and wasn’t one of the six that were being served at.

Self Confidence is something that I still struggle with but I sucked it up and emailed the school to ask if they’d be open to having it done.   To my shocking surprise withing thirty minutes of me emailing the principal emails me back and said: “We were actually supposed to have someone do this but they had to cancel at the last minute.”  I let her know I’d be more than happy to do it for them and we scheduled a meeting.

Come to find out, there were 25 bathroom stalls, then shared individual bathrooms for Kindergarten and First Grade at the school.  A piece of me wondered what I was getting into but, then I thought- I’m up for the challenge!

Quotes, Cutting and Weeding Lots Of Vinyl

Over the next few weeks, I went through lots of quotes and affirmations to find the ones I felt would work best.  Making sure that the fonts could be read by younger kids so that it wasn’t just “pretty” and served a purpose.  I don’t know exactly how many hours went into it, but it was a lot.  Luckily,  I found a lot of really great quotes at lovesvg.com.  I created some, which took a while and then others I was able to edit png images through Cricut Design Studio.

If you don’t have a Cricut but are a crafty person- these things are amazing!  The older ones you were much more limited because you had to use cartridges but for the new ones the possibilities are endless!

You want to use permanent vinyl which can be found at Cricut.com or also at 651vinyl.com.

My daughter helped with the weeding process on some of the quotes.  At first, I didn’t tell her what we were doing it for but then I wanted her to know that we were doing it as a way of investing in the school. I want her to know she should take pride in her school and that we see it as an important thing.   There are many different ways to convey this to your child, this was at the moment, the way we were able to convey it to ours.

My husband and another fantastic mom helped in installing the vinyl.  It took a few hours but we all agree it was well worth it.  I hope that it inspires a child.  Maybe if their day is a little rough it can make them smile.  Maybe it will serve as a reminder to them.  It may be later down the road when they look back and remember it being there that they see someone hoped to brighten their day.

We can’t fix everything, and we don’t have time to.  But it’s important to stop and realize that we can still do something, no matter how small.

Arts Education: A lot More Than Paintings on Our Fridges

Filed Under: Kids September 14, 2018

I completely believe that the arts and art education plays a huge part in childhood development.  I’m honored to have this guest post from We The Parents to share with you!

Arts Education: A lot More Than Paintings on Our Fridges

Diplomacy is a skill that parents learn early. Like when your kiddo arrives home from school beaming, and eagerly thrusts a colorful piece of paper at you. Now you’ve got a split second to figure out what on earth it is.

Think fast… it’s definitely art… it’s got a Picasso feel (ears, eyes, and mouth not where you’d expect)… some sort of… animal.. maybe…

“What a gorgeous… giraffe?”

No. Oh, yes, an elephant. Of course. Now I see it!

“I love this elephant. It’s going straight up on the fridge.”

Of course, we adore our children’s artwork, but it’s the pride on their little faces when we hang it up that is truly priceless.

On top of this, the value of learning arts at school goes beyond the artistic skills they develop. Being immersed in the arts develops their cognitive abilities and fosters positive character traits, like self-confidence, openness, and empathy.

Shockingly, however, arts in schools are being chopped left, right, and center. With budgets being squeezed, it’s Arts Programs that is often the first to go. This is a serious matter. And if you’re not convinced, then take a look at these 51 ways that Arts Education benefits our children.

51-Benefits-of-Arts-Education-for-Kids-INFOGRAPHIC

Arts have the power to positively transform the lives of our kids. That’s why we should all join together in support of this week’s National Arts in Education Week (learn more about it here).

Our children should have the right to a diverse and culturally rich education; one that attends to their minds, body, and wellbeing. We rob them of this opportunity if we drop Arts Programs from schools.

Let’s unite around National Arts in Education Week. I think we can all now agree that the arts have earned their spot in our schools just as your kid’s Giraphalant creation has earned a spot on your fridge.

Soggy Doggy Game At Home

Soggy Doggy Game At Home

Soggy Doggy Game

The Objective: Make it around the game board without getting wet

How to Play: Each player picks a game token: a bar of soap, rubber duck, paw print or dog pone.

Players take turns rolling the die and move their token around the board.  Based on the color you roll (pink, yellow, blue, or red) you move your token to the first unoccupied space matching that color.  There is also paw print on the die means you can move your playing piece to the space in front of the player who is in the lead.  Then, you follow the action shown on the space.   The action will be either a paw print or a dog bone.

The paw print means you push down on the paw print handle of the shower for the number of times shown (which soaks the dog).  The dog bone means you turn the bone handle of the shower the number of times shown. Turning the handle is what will randomly cause the dog to start shaking getting you wet.  If the dog starts shaking, you have to turn the handle again to stop the shaking and move your token back to Start, picking up a disk with the matching symbol of your piece. If on another of your turns the dog shakes again you can give back the piece in order to stay where you are.

There is also a Paw Print Symbol on the die which means you can move your playing piece to the space in front of the player who is in the lead.  (You still have to perform the action on that space)

Do you get soaked? : No.  You have to be really close to even feel the water which can be a little frustrating to kids who think they are going to get wet.  Water will still get on the surface of whatever the game is sitting on though so be conscious of that.   I put extra water on the dog to so that when he shook the kids would feel it.

Ages: The box says 4 & Up.   It’s a super easy game to play and can help teach little ones their colors and counting (it is just 1-2).

Make it educational:  When it’s your turn to roll the die, you have to spell a word or make a full sentence with a word.  For the words, I use a list of sight words. It is an easy way to get my daughter to practice spelling words and for both kids to practice making whole sentences.
