Teachers Appreciation is next week!  If you’re as busy as I’ve been and this has snuck up on you- no worries!  I’ve got some great ideas for that can be put together quickly!

Teachers have a very important job, and they put up with so much.  They give their all to their students each year instilling wisdom and a love for learning.   Considering that they lay this educational foundation for our children they don’t get paid nearly enough.  These gifts don’t make up for for that, but they can be tokens of appreciation for all that they do.

The Life Of A Busy Mom And A Review Of Fit Mom Go

The Life Of A Busy Mom And A Review Of Fit Mom Go

A Review Of Fit Mom Go, fitness for moms that is accessible, easy, and do-able. littlemissblog.com

How many times a week do you exercise?  This is the question my doctor asked me at a visit not too long ago.  “Uhhh” Does working full time, being a wife, mom, solo-prenuer,  blogger, and college student count as physical activity? In all honesty, I don’t have time for a gym membership.   I’m barely able to manage juggling making sure my first grader’s homework gets completed, lunches get made and bags for the next day are ready after working all day never mind that all of those don’t even check off all my task for the day.

I’ve had a gym membership in the past to which I’d go for maybe 3 weeks and then stop.  I basically went for the treadmill and/or elliptical to which I did not feel energized or happy after completing.  I have never understood when people say they love the gym.  I’m happy for you, it’s just not a connection I’ve ever been able to make.

Not Enough Time For The Gym

I honestly do not have the time or patience for going to the gym after becoming a mom.  It’s six pm or just after before I get home and get the kids fed.  Then it’s homework with my daughter, playing with my son (in between making lunches), baths, story and then bed.   Once the kids are in bed I’m doing homework part of the week and blogging/working on WordPress sites the other part.  Then once a week, each kid has dance class which pushes our timeline further out.

We try on the weekends to play outside with the kids or go on walks but there’s also fun (ha!) things we have to do like clean the house, run errands (like the grocery store), and finish up any task we didn’t get done during the week.  It’s tough and it’s tiring. I try and end work by 10 to hang out with my husband for at least an hour where we watch a tv show at least a couple times a week.

I’ve thought about getting a treadmill for home, we did get an elliptical a couple years ago but again, trying to do that with someone yelling for Mommy is hard.  That and my attention span is short and I get bored with it.

Fitness Videos

About four years ago, my father-in-law purchased a popular DVD program set for my husband and I for our birthdays (which are 3 days apart).   I just couldn’t get into it and then on top of that my goal is not to be ripped so putting all this time and effort into that supposedly being my goal just didn’t motivate me.  I’m sure it’s a great program and has done wonders for people, I just couldn’t find motivation in it.

Balance, Strength, & Playtime

Balance, Strength, & Playtime- these are the things in life that are important to me.  They are the things that right now, I can relate to.   Balance, because so often as moms we’re juggling 10 different things at a moments notice.  Strength, to get done what I need to and not hurt myself in the process whether it’s carrying a kid around or slinging around bags.  Playtime with the kids is important, and it’s moments like that they’ll remember.  That new doll they love is great, but time spent will be what remains in their minds.

The Fit Mom Go program ties all of this in together.  There are workouts for balance and strengthening, as well as ones to do with the kids.  The workouts help show you that playtime with the kids, can also be workout time whether you decide to run around the yard, hop like bunnies, fly like birds, the possibilities are endless.  Working out doesn’t always mean that you’re using weights or at a gym.  Those days where I am working out doing core exercises, or squats- I know that later in the week when I go to play superheroes with the kids, I’m building the strength to keep up and not give out after 5 minutes.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd-JlRRh1cN/?taken-by=littlemissblg

Exercise Is Normal

Fit Mom Go has also shown me that not only is strengthening my body good for me so that it can do all the task I require of it, but it also shows my kids that exercise is normal.   Growing up, it seemed as though exercise was something you did solely to lose weight.  I’ll be honest with you, if that’s the case- I’d prefer to just cut way back on what I’m eating (which isn’t always good).  I want my kids to realize that exercise is something you do, just like putting on clothes in the morning or brushing your hair. It doesn’t have to be something you dread, it can be though something you just do.

When I want to give up, I remember who’s watching littlemissblog.com

No Gym Required

There’s no gym required to participate in the Fit Mom Go program.  A mat and some weights come in handy, but nothing that requires you to drive to the gym to get a workout in.  It makes it so much easier to fit in a workout when you have options of some that are 10-15 minutes long (as well as some longer ones).  Some days, I may get two or three in throughout the day, so you can always add on if you have time available.  Other days, I may only get one in, and that’s ok too.

Facebook Accountability Group

With the paid membership to Fit Mom Go, there is a Facebook Accountability group.   Erin does live workouts on Mondays (that you can go back and do anytime) and then picks a workout on Wednesday from her workout collection.  This is awesome because it’s not always one that you’d necessarily choose on your own but one that you should definitely try.  There are giveaways, encouragement, challenges, and accountability check-ins to help keep you on track.

Healthier And Stronger Goals

Fit Mom Go as shown me that healthier and stronger are important for me and my kids.  Having the strength to keep up with the demands of being a mom, having a clear head and being able to be present not only with my kids but with everyone else also, makes a difference in life.  It makes me feel better.  If you’re a mom like me, who at this point in life that Britney Spears bikini pic is not motivation to workout (let’s face it…quite frankly I’m too tired to even get to the beach let alone carry everything that I have to with me) and the motivation  to fit in exercise so that you can take care of yourself, and in turn be able to take care of those around you does inspire you to workout- then I definitely suggest checking out this program.

Incentives To Try!

If you need any more incentive to try… on my Facebook page  I shared a post about Fit Mom Go’s Summer of Your Dreams program where you can get 25% off your first month’s membership with the code SUMMERPREP,  after May 1st the price will be increasing so catch it before Tuesday!!  Check out Fit Mom Go for all the details!

This post is not sponsored, I honestly love the program and feel that other moms could benefit greatly from it :)!  While when push comes to shove, this picture isn’t much motivation for me to workout-

But the idea of this (below) is 🙂  Being present, having the energy to play and be present with the kids after a long day (or week).

Food and kids can always be a challenge.  For us, it always has been.  Kids go through different phases of what they’ll eat (or not eat) and it can be frustrating as a parent. There are so many suggestions and opinions on how to raise a non-picky eater.  Every child is different- ultimately, we have to offer them healthy choices and try and make the best of it finding a balance in food choices.

Suggestion: Making Your Own Baby Food

I made baby food fresh with both of my kids.  I made a variety of different types of foods, even ones that I personally don’t like as a way to hopefully have a non-picky eater.  Can I tell you- it didn’t work? Maybe for some people, it does and that is fantastic.  I’m not saying not to try, I ‘m just saying if it doesn’t happen immediately don’t be discouraged.

What I’ve learned about toddlers and food

I try my best to get the kids to try new foods and to get the appropriate servings of food groups.  It doesn’t always work…in fact, it probably fails more often than not.  My pediatrician told me that toddlers eat when they are hungry.  If they aren’t hungry it’s a task they just don’t want to do.  Meaning, don’t offer them junk food because it makes you feel better about getting them to eat something.   This is hard, and I don’t always stick to the rule sometimes I give in and give them the goldfish and juice.  However, I’ve found that if I am patient and wait until they are actually hungry, they are more apt to eat real food.

Involve Kids In Cooking

Kidstir is a monthly subscription box that comes in the mail with recipes and tools for kids to cook with. It makes it convenient because you get a great set of recipes and kids love to use the tools that are especially for them.

Salad Bar (from Kidstir)

Introduce your kids to new salad combos at a restaurant salad bar and encourage experimentation. Ask them to try a new veggie or dressing or combination of toppings on their lettuce. At home, you can then create your own salad bar with bowls of toppings. Think greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula), protein (hard-boiled eggs, cubed cooked chicken), veggies (corn, cherry tomatoes, grated carrots), and dressings. Then let everyone at the table customize their own salad. This makes a fun dinner when the kids’ friends are over, too.  For more on Kidstir check out my review- Cooking with Kidstir!

Don’t forget the Croutons!  I know they are my son’s favorite part of a salad! This recipe is super easy!

This one is a little trickier to involve the kids with however, they can still help with getting the seasonings together as well as getting the ingredients out.  Sometimes making them part of the process can encourage them to try new foods as well!

The Prodigal Son- From His Brother’s Perspective

Filed Under: Mommy, Wisdom March 7, 2018

The Prodigal Son- From His Brother’s Perspective

Prodigal Son from his brothers perspective littlemissblog.com

Time often changes the way that we see things.  Lessons we learn in life cause us to view things differently as we get older.  Last night, I was reading a parable from the bible to the kids before bed.   It was about the prodigal son.  It was interesting to me how my viewpoint has changed over the years from what I thought about this story.   It’s more than a story of a father’s love and mercy towards his child.  It’s also about understanding that while your anger might be valid, and there are probably bits of information you’re missing.

The Prodigal Son

There was a father with two sons. The younger son begged his father to give him his inheritance. The father decided to do so and gave each son their half of the estate. The younger son decided to move away where he squandered everything in wild living. After spending everything he went and found a job. He was to feed pigs for a farmer. Out of desperation, he found himself longing to eat what the pigs had. He came to his senses and thought about his fathers hired servants. They have food to spare and he is sitting there starving to death. He decided to go back to his father and admit that he had sinned against heaven and his father. Feeling unworthy, he would ask to be a hired servant.

A Parent’s Love

While he was still a long way off, the father saw him coming. His father, filled with compassion- ran to him and threw his arms around him. The father felt overjoyed that he had returned. The son said to him “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” The father asked that the best robe to put on him. He also asked for sandals for his feet and to find the fattest calf to kill for a feast to celebrate his sons return. “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”

The Prodigal’s Older Brother

The older son was out in the field working and as he got closer to the house he heard music and saw dancing. He asked one of the servants what was going on and was told his brother had returned. His father had called for a feast to celebrate him being back safe and sound.

The older brother was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and pleaded with him, but the older son explained his anger “All of these years I have been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me a young goat to celebrate with my friends but this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home you kill the fatten goat for him!” I can see him waving his arms around as he is explaining this letting out every ounce of frustration.
The father gently explained; “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”

Love and Mercy

This parable shows the undying love and mercy of a parent. It shows a child, who realizes that they’ve done wrong but they know it would be better to return home to be a servant that to continue like this.  I think he honestly felt unworthy to be his father’s son but knew that even as a servant in his father’s home he would be better off.  I don’t think he expected his father to take him back in as a son at all.

I can see the scene in my mind of the father looking up and realizing his son has returned. Running to him, throwing his arms around him and crying. I can picture the son apologizing and the father cutting him off, wiping the tears from his eyes and claiming with such joy ‘my son has come home again!’ looking into his eyes asking ‘do you know how much I still love you?’

I can remember as a kid in Sunday school thinking that older brother was a real jerk. I mean, seriously he should learn to be grateful. If there had been hash tags, it would’ve said #DontBeLikeTheOlderBrother.

Relating To Both Sides

We have all been the prodigal son at some point in our lives, on different levels and we can relate. Here’s the funny part, as an adult- I can completely sympathize with the older brother. I think that we’ve all been in similar situations at some point.  I don’t think the older brother was perfect. He probably complained sometimes about having to work and his father may have given him some slack and a few days off.
In this moment though, all he could see was he had been following the rules, sacrificing, and no one ever noticed him. No one ever threw a party to say thanks for being responsible and dependable. The older brother wasn’t a bad guy or a jerk. He was justified in how he felt in that moment. If you look at it from his point of view, he felt unappreciated and hurt.  Even though he tried to do all the right things all these years it didn’t seem to matter.

It wasn’t that he wished harm to his brother, it was that in this moment, he didn’t understand why the father had to go for an all-out celebration as opposed to a quiet happiness. Yes, it sort of sounds like a very three-year-old type tantrum but if we’re honest we’ve all been there.

His father had a good point though; the eldest son could peacefully rest at night all these years knowing he was provided for. He could look at himself at the end of the day and know he had been honest and hard working.  Ultimately, he wouldn’t trade that for anything.

While his brother was forgiven, it would probably still continue to weigh on his mind years from this point that he had squandered his inheritance.  He will have to work even harder in order to build someone up of his own. It’s not that the younger brother’s life was easier or that he ‘got by’ with something. I’m sure things didn’t magically turn great for him.

Sometimes, when we’re on the end of the older brother, we have to step back and realize that we wouldn’t have changed the good we’ve done or the sacrifices we’ve made for those we love. It’s natural to get frustrated and angered at thinking your hard work was pointless. Your hard work isn’t pointless though.

The What-If

If the older brother hadn’t stuck around, who knows that his father would have lived to see this day. There are times when embracing mercy has to be a conscious effort on our part. Unfair as it may seem, there are moments where we have to choose to let go of our anger and what has been done to move forward. In the bigger picture, it creates the thread of hope that weaves through our past and helps us move forward when we think we can’t. As humans, no one is perfect. It’s about learning from your mistakes and growing with that knowledge.

Really, We’re All The Same

The prodigal son’s brother was just as human as the prodigal son himself.  He wasn’t being a bad guy because he got upset.  As an adult, I see this story isn’t just about a father’s love and mercy.  It’s about stepping back to see the other person’s side and not being so quick to go with our anger.  We don’t know always know the whole story or walked in the other person’s shoes and sometimes we have to pause and think about that regardless of how justified we are in our feelings.

Let it Go

Long before the Frozen phenomenon and Idina Menzel belting out those famous words, a band named the Newsboys penned a song by the same title.  I think it fits the prodigal son’s brother.  I know it has fit me in instances when I feel like someone has done wrong and I don’t see why I should be the one to look past it.

You are waiting on a beach
For a healing word to come
Maybe an apology in a bottle
Maybe a flare that says, “I’m sorry.”
And the hurting leaves you numb
Will you forgive?
Will you forget?
Will you live what you know?
He left his rights
Will you leave yours?
You don’t understand it
Let it go

Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Kids!

Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Kids! littlemissblog

Are you looking for fun things to do with the kids on St. Patrick’s Day?  Even if you aren’t Irish, it can fun to join in and celebrate the day. I’ve rounded up some fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with kids along with some facts about the day!

The Origin of St. Patrick’s Day

The History of St. Patrick’s Day is about more than being Irish and drinking beer.  St. Patrick is actually credited with bringing Christianity to the country of Ireland.

From History.com:

Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain and was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people. In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most well-known legend is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

Fun Facts:

It was originally a ‘dry’ holiday- For most of the 20th century, Saint Patrick’s Day was considered a strictly religious holiday in Ireland, which meant that the nation’s pubs were closed for business on March 17. (The one exception went to beer vendors at the big national dog show, which was always held on Saint Patrick’s Day.) In 1970, the day was converted to a national holiday, and the stout resumed flowing. –From Mental Floss

There’s no corn in Corned Beef- Corned beef and cabbage, a traditional Saint Patrick’s Day staple, doesn’t have anything to do with the grain corn. Instead, it’s a nod to the large grains of salt that were historically used to cure meats, which were also known as “corns.” –From Mental Floss

The Shamrock- Legend has it St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, by showing an unbeliever the three-leafed plant with one stalk.

Green? – the color originally associated with Saint Patrick was blue

He was born in Britain- Despite his Irish notoriety, Saint Patrick was British; born to Roman parents in Scotland or Wales in the late fourth century. He was kidnapped, brought up in Ireland and then eventually returned back to Ireland.

Seeing The Value In Other People

Seeing The Value In Others

Bus Driver

“I’m just a bus driver/and what do I know”  This is part of the chorus to one of my favorite songs.  It’s a song called Bus Driver by Cademons Call.  It’s from 1997 but it’s just as relevant today as it was then.  My parents always told me that you never look down on anyone because you feel like their job is less than yours.  There are parts of your job and life that depend on other things that you don’t see at first glance. It’s so important to see the value in other people.

This song does an excellent point of painting that picture for you.

I am a bus driver and it’s four in the morning
And I’m pressing out my clothes beside my bed
Fourteen years been on the job
And with many miles behind
Still I’m up at 3:30 to make sure I’m there on time
My car gets me along just fine
To and from the station
But my castle is this Houston metro bus
My first stop is Ashbury
And the sign’s been gone for years
All the same the people wait
Cause they know that I’ll be there

More Than Just

So this guy is a bus driver, he’s been one for 14 years.  He knows his route (even when the signs are missing), he knows traffic patterns, and he’s always sure to be on time.   Personally, he has a car that gets him where he needs to go but he’s there for the people that don’t.

He asks the question “what would you say if I told you I wouldn’t be by today? Would you say that I’m just a bus driver and what do I know?”

What would you say
If I told you that I won’t be by today
Would you say that
I’m just a bus driver
And what do I know
Just a bus driver
And what do I know
Just a bus driver
And what do I know

To the company who has employees they depend on to get to work, even though the CEO is driving a Bentley what would he say if they all couldn’t come in because that guy that is “just a bus driver” couldn’t make it today?

Finding the value littlemissblog.com

Not to worry though, he’s always there and sometimes he’s even early-

I’m always there by 5:15
And lately, I’ve been early
Cause Judith likes to be in early to the bank
And she gives me conversation
And a token good for riding
And she’s happy all alone
And then there’s Charles in retail sales
And I hope they pay him well
For the work that young man does
Cause I’ve never seen the inside of a custom refrigerator
But I know that he’s the first and last one there
And I wonder what they do all day
At their respective works
I suppose they give money and take money away
Still, I’m just orbiting this town
With the post office my sun
And I’m circling again
Judith and Charles may or may not realize how much they depend on this bus driver.  Not just for getting them from one place to the other, but the time he takes to invest in his day (and them in his).  What would happen if the bus was automatically driven and there was no conversation to be had?
But what can I see
From the limited confines of my bus driving seat
Only me
We’re all bus drivers, helping each other get where they need to go, even indirectly.  It’s hard to remember sometimes but there is a much bigger picture to what we can see from the confines of our driving seat.  It’s a reminder to be kind, try and have patience, and realize that we are not above or below anyone.  There’s a lot of working pieces to this thing called like and they have to work together for things to work well.
Hurricane Season always reminds me of this when there’s a storm coming and I go to the grocery store.  What would I do if that cashier didn’t come to work that day? If that bagger or the guy who stocks the shelves said he didn’t want to show up? I’d be in trouble.  What if no one wanted to work sanitation? We’d really be in a situation then.  No one is “just a…”  We’re all part of the bigger picture of life.
Just a bus driver
And what do I know
I’m just a bus driver
So don’t believe that
Just a bus driver
Well don’t believe that
Just a bus driver
Well don’t believe that
We’re all just bus drivers
And it’s time to go home

Is there someone that helps make your day better that you didn’t realize before?

A First Graders Shocking Answer to ‘How Was Your Day’

A First Graders Shocking Answer to How Was Your Day littlemissblog.com

*This post is coming from the perspective of a mom, that just wants her kids to be ok. *

“We are having a drill in case a guy with a gun comes into the school with a gun and tries to shoot us”   That was the answer my 1st grader gave to “how was your day?”
The school had sent out a message earlier in the day that due to the recent events in Parkwood, sometime this week they would be completing a drill but that teachers and students would not be aware when it would happen as they had been in the past.  The message made me want to cry. It’s not the schools’ fault, and I know they would prefer not do these drills but it’s necessary.  I do my best to shield my kids from a lot of the news because there are things they can’t process and things they process differently than adults.  All I could imagine when reading the notification earlier in the day was my kid having nightmares or developing a fear of going to school.  Then… I get that reply to “how was your day?”.
I grew up in a house with guns (hunting rifles).  Gun safety was drilled into us.  I don’t have a fear of guns, I get that guns don’t kill people- people kill people.  I get all of that.  What I do not understand is why your everyday person would need a semi-automatic/automatic weapon.  You want a gun to hunt with? Go for it. (Disclosure: You should be eating what you kill and not doing it just for the sake of killing it- but that’s another topic.)
It doesn’t make sense and if someone can give me a good, solid reason I’m willing to listen. Everyone wants to cling to the “second amendment right to bear arms” but do you know what the second amendment actually says?
“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
That amendment was put into effect December 15, 1791.  1791.  Well before automatic weapons can’t we agree?  So, if a gang wants to refer to themselves instead as a militia and shoot people in their “territory” because they feel threatened it should be legal?
The Right To Bear Arms. What Does The Second Amendment Really Mean?
Overcoming Delusions About The Second Amendment

I have every right to defend my home

“If someone breaks into my home I have every right to defend myself and shoot them.”  Ok, I see what you’re saying.  My problem though with this defense is that as any gun safety material will tell you, your ammunition is supposed to be kept separately from your gun.   So, you can’t make a quick decision on the simplest of questions, you can’t function in the middle of the night if you have to wake up to check on one of your kids BUT if there were an intruder you would go right into ninja mode and be able to get the gun, get the ammunition and aim.

I should be able to defend myself and carry my weapon on me

Let’s be real for a minute.  If the world comes to the point where I need to carry a weapon on me out of fear that I need to defend myself on a daily basis- I don’t even think I want to be here.  That’s just scary.  You should consider changing where you hang out if this is your concern.

I guess next we will ban knives too?

That’s an excellent defense mechanism.  That’s like, we ban heroin what’s next are we going to ban Tylenol?  It’s irrelevant. An assault rifle compared to a knife which has multiple valid reasons for use?
Oh, because criminals go through legal methods to get these guns.
Well, the guy at Parkwood did.  I understand that other criminals don’t but does that mean that we don’t do everything we can to prevent it?  Even at best there are not accurate systems in place to keep guns legally out of the hands of mentally ill people.  On top of that, how far do you judge it? That individual’s mental health? The mental health of their immediate family and the likelihood they could snap at some point?

Giving Teachers Guns Is Not The Solution

The idea that giving teachers guns to protect students is not the solution for a few reasons.  First, are you going to pay their overtime for a required amount of shooting range practice and training each month? Making sure they can keep the weapon and bullets separate and load it and fire in a moment’s notice. Secondly, you hear about (although rare) teachers smacking a kid or throwing something at them. Do you think that particular teacher would hesitate with a gun?  How about we take that energy and effort and put it into training teachers for signs of problems and having counselors to help those kids?  I’m even all for hiring a security guard to walk the school but the idea of suggesting that we should give teachers guns is ridiculous.  I’m surprised the suggestion hasn’t been to make Kevlar Vest and Helmets part of every school uniform.

This is how is starts….

The other common argument is, this is how it starts with them taking your guns away!!  Ok.  I’m not really seeing that but for argument’s sake- so we can’t control the use of opioids so let’s just put it in the shelf. Drug addicts are going to get it anyway. Just because we can’t get a handle on that doesn’t mean we take Tylenol off the shelf does it?  Does that make sense?

We OWE Our Kids More

Let’s not be petty.  We owe our kids so much more than that.  I don’t understand how anyone can watch the kids from Parkwood travel to Tallahassee to plead with the government to make changes so this never happens again, say that we don’t need some type of gun control.   Our children should not have to go to school in fear of a guy coming in with a gun to shoot them.  I fully understand gun safety conversations with kids, but a conversation about staying super quiet so a gunman doesn’t come shoot them?  That’s just not right.
I do not think the government should control everything that we do.  There are things I think go overboard.  The gun issue comes down to us, the people of the United States of America- coming together to say this is ridiculous and your everyday citizen has no reason for an assault rifle so why have them available?
Let’s not let this issue go.  Don’t let it be the news of the week and then suddenly something else grabs our attention.  THIS needs to be front and center. THIS needs a solution.   We’re going around and circles and it’s to the point where kids themselves are having to go to Washington to try and fight for themselves.

#NeverAgain.
