Must Have Items To Take With You When Going to Disney World

Must Have Items To Take to Disney World

Must Have Items To Take With You To Disney World

There are some must have items that you should take with your to Disney World. I have found that these items always come in handy.  We’re frequent visitors to the parks and it sucks when you have to spend more money than necessary that you could have done something else with.   These 5 items will save you time and money on your trip.

*This post does include affiliate links, meaning that if you make a purchase from one of the links I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you
  1. Ponchos

In Florida, you never know when that 15-minute storm is going to come down and it sucks to pay $18 for one poncho at Walt Disney World. (Trust me, I’ve had to do it.  Yes, I should have known better) This are one of my top must have items because of that.  It’s also something that I make sure that we have packed in our bags because there have been many times where it was forgotten.

Kids Disney Kids’ Mickey and Minnie Mouse Poncho Set (Pack of 2)

Adult Disney Adult Mickey and Minnie Mouse Poncho Set (Pack of 2)

2. Disney Pins.

If you are interested in collecting and trading Disney Pins, there are some great deals on Amazon like this one Disney Trading Pins-Lot of 25-No Duplicates-LE-HM-Rack-Cast-Free Shipping-1. You can also find some on places like eBay. This is a great way to have some fun and interact with castmembers.

3. Pens

For your autograph book (I know it’s weird, but not all autograph books come with a pen)Disney Mickey and Minnie Gel Pen Set.  I haven’t found cheaper autograph books on Amazon, there are some listed but I haven’t tried them and some of them had weird reviews.  Etsy, however, does have some cute ones.  It can be a lot of fun to get creative with your autograph books.

4. Light up toys

These are always fun when you’re at the park at night Glowsticks, 100 Light up Toys Glow Stick Bracelets Mixed Colors (Tube of 100).   Kids have a blast with glow toys (even away from the parks) but this can be a big money saver and I guarantee they will have just as much fun with these as they would the one $24 item you can purchase in the park (which always has the possibility of getting lost or having to be carried by you for the night).

5.Sunscreen

Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Pure Sun Defense Disney Frozen Sunscreen Spray SPF 50
Funny fact-  Frozen Sunscreen is a top-rated sunscreen. See this article from the Today Show and Consumer Reports Review.  You may not think you need the sunscreen but trust me, even on overcast days it can often be needed especially if you are fair-skinned.

Other Recommended Items:

These are some bonus items that I like to take with us.  I  pack a small gift that is from one of the characters.  I typically find them at Walmart, Target or on sale at the Disney Store. Anything from a small plush, to pj’s, or small figurines. They kids love it. I’ll get to the room before they go in and put them out. Plan B is to do it when we leave the hotel room the first time.   When we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge I got a Chip and Dale plush and gave one to each of the kids from Chip and Dale.  You wouldn’t believe how excited they are about it and how much it defers them from asking to buy stuff at the park.

World Of Disney located in Disney Springs

World of Disney at Disney Springs has a MUCH bigger selection of souvineers than any of the gift shops at Disney World.  I have no idea why, but they do, I first noticed it with the Ears.  I found the same Mickey Ears in every gift shop but at World Of Disney, they had Captain America Mickey Ears, Chewbacca Mickey Ears, a huge variety of stuff.  Even their plush and clothing had more of a variety.

Is there anything you’ve taken with you that has saved you $?

A Stay At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

A Stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

A Stay At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

For my husbands birthday I booked us a stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  It was absolutely beautiful!  The parking was a little frustrating, but other than that it was very nice.

The Grand Floridian is a Deluxe Disney hotel and considered to be one of their top luxury hotels.  If you are a Florida resident though- you can stay here for a reasonable cost.  I’ve seen it as low as $330/night which isn’t shabby considering the beautiful grounds, and the short boat or monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom. I’m going to admit to you know that I prefer to stay at one of the Magic Kingdom properties because of their convince to Magic Kingdom.  It save so much time and energy that loading the stuff in the car, getting it all out, folding the stroller up to get on a tram, and so on.  I completely think it’s worth it for me being able to avoid those things. (That being said, I’m not going to pay an outreagous cost to stay either. )

The rooms had a very Victorian feel to them, and we lucked out with a view of the Seven Seas Lagoon.  We had a great view of the light parade on the water!

Dolphin, Dinosaur, and a Gator in the Light Parade on the Seven Seas Lagoon Light Parade- Turtle and Octopus on Seven Seas Lagoon Light Parade King Triton and Sea Horses

In the Main Building they have a band that plays in the evening.  The kids loved to stop in there and hear them. Also, in the afternoon they have a Princess Promenade, where kids can meet Cinderella and Prince Charming then the kids stroll downstairs behind Cinderella and Prince Charming and they dance in the lobby.  It’s so cute! (Side Note: anyone can enjoy the Princess Promenade, you don’t have to be staying at the hotel.)

Band At The Grand Floridian

The Splash Park

They also LOVED their splash area!  It’s Alice in Wonderland Themed with teacups-

There are two bigger pools there, (one with a slide that my daughter loved) however we spent most of our pool time in the splash park though.  The resort also has activities such as lawn games and movies at night.  One night after we got back from the park we sat on the lawn and watched “Inside Out” it was a nice way to end the day.

A Tinkerbell Surprise

The kids favorite part of the stay was in the evenings they do ‘turn down’ service and leave you chocolate on the pillows.  I told them Tinkerbell came by and left it while we were out, lol.

Birthday Celebration

For my husbands birthday happened to be on our check out day.  I had a cake delivered that morning along with a white chocolate gold painted Mickey Mouse.  I ordered the cake from In-Room Dining so I just called the day before to get it.  Guess what we had for breakfast, lol 🙂  (Learn about In Room Celebrations that are another option!)

They even included candles and matches when they brought the cake, which I thought was pretty cool!

We had a really great time.  The access to the park couldn’t have been more convenient and stress free.  There was so much to do at the hotel as well, as the views there are fantastic! Here are some of our evening views 🙂

Our [Ever Expanding] Disney Life

Filed Under: Disney, Kids July 7, 2017

We ♥ Disney

Magic Kingdom Castle

We are big Disney fans. Before kids we weren’t the kind to have Disney stuff just around, but it had found a way into events in our life. Our wedding invitations were Cinderella inspired, there were a couple Disney songs included in our playlist as well. After kids, it’s almost all we know…lol. It’s now our Disney life.

My daughter loved Mickey & Minnie and Rapunzel.  (You can also check out our Rapunzel Breakfast!) She was familiar with Disney characters that I didn’t even know how she knew who they were. It was crazy. This led us to our first visit not long after she was one. She loved it! There are a lot of times that people have concerns about whether their child is old enough to enjoy it or not, but honestly- any age can enjoy the Magic Kingdom.

Disney World With Little Ones

mickey and minnie

I will say Disney World is very different with small ones. We don’t rush through to get to rides. In fact, we do a lot of walking around and looking. I’ve seen areas and noticed details that I’ve never paid attention to before. It’s amazing to see it from that point of view. Not the one where you are trying to accomplish getting all your rides checked off and running from one place to the other. The one where you sit and take it in, you see the details in buildings, the kids dressed as their favorite character, and pretend that you hear Pascal laughing in the bushes.

Annual Passholders

We became annual pass holders two years ago and I love it. It’s not too far from us so it’s a nice weekend getaway. I’ve determined that as long as we go 6 times a year I get my money out of it. I previously booked vacations to WDW as an independent travel agent as well.  I loved being able to share my Disney knowledge and help people with their trips.  It’s not something I really made any money off of, I did it because it’s fun.  Well, that and it gives me the excuse to visit different resorts when we are down there for “research.”  You can also see our In Room Celebration at the Beach Club Resort.

I’ll be sharing some Disney knowledge and fun in upcoming post 🙂

Visiting Kennedy Space Center

Filed Under: Kids, Mommy, Travel June 12, 2017

Visiting Kennedy Space Center

We were looking for a weekend out of town after a few stressful weeks of various activities, school and work going on and decided on Kennedy Space Center.  It wasn’t too far of a drive for us and we had never been.  Having two small kids we try not to be in the car too long for the sake of their comfort and our sanity.

Water entry to Kennedy Space Center

The drive into the space center is beautiful.  The space center is not too far from Port Canaveral so if you’ve ever taken a cruise out of that port and want to take an extra day this is an excellent place to check out.

I’m sure that in it’s prime it was beyond amazing and busy.  Even now, there’s a lot to see and a lot of history to learn from.  This is somewhere that is a great trip for fun while being educational for kids of various ages.  There’s a great page from Kennedy Space Center official site explaining how to plan your visit.  There is so much to do and see here!

The Rocket Gardens

Here there are some of the initial rockets that were sent up along with a few replicas that you can actually get inside.  It is amazing and crazy to think that someone was sent into space in some of these.  When you read it, it doesn’t always register what it was truly like and the sacrifice made to take this journey. When you see in person the replicas of these rockets that were built as the United States made the journey towards space it is so incredible.  The career of an astronaut sounds like an incredible thing and then when you see what they actually had to go through and their cramped ride in space it will definitely make you rethink it however it also shows the determination they had to be part of this historic accomplishment.

Little Mr. H was not into pretending he was waiting to go up in the rocket…LOL

Bus Explore Tour Visit- Mission Control

You can take a bus tour as part of your general admission ticket to Kennedy Space Center.  It takes you around to the launch pads and to see Atlantis along with various other space museum features.  Some of the features feel like something from a sci-fi movie but in a really cool, fascinating way.  I highly recommend the bus tour as it will give you some time to sit and relax, and there are things that you’re able to see that otherwise, you’d miss out when exploring on foot.

Can’t forget the gators..

gatorThis was one of 5 different gators that we saw on the bus throughout our tour.  This is Florida after all 🙂 LOL!  We were also able to see a Bald Eagle and their nest during the bus tour as well.

Successful Mission

Pretending to fly the spaceship

This visit was a lot of fun.  I was worried about whether the kids would find it fun. They are 3 and 5 so it was if-y. I’m happy to say that (once I promised nobody was going to shoot us off into space) they were very excited and had a fun day.  They are already asking to go back for another visit.  I think this is something they’ll enjoy again when they are a little older as well.  Although they may not remember this visit later on, it is always something I’ll remember as they explored and looked around in amazement.

Kennedy Space Center is a great idea to visit with kids of all ages as well as just an adult visit.  There are so much history and education as well as fun that you can definitely spend a whole day.

Hello Alexa!

For Mother’s Day, my husband bought me an Amazon Echo.  Better known as Alexa.  I love it.  He actually loves it too, he’s not much of a technology kinda guy but he finds her entertaining and loves that he can get music just by asking for a song.  Then there are the kids.  It’s like they have a new member of the family.  Seriously, it’s hilarious.  Plus, she’s a member of the family they think they can boss around which is a whole other story.

Alexa and the kids…

Amazon Alexa

Alexa doesn’t understand my 3-year-old too much,  I think it’s because of the tone of his voice.  If he uses his “hulk voice” which is a deep version of his regular voice then she acknowledges him.

My daughter is starting to understand she can’t ramble on, she has to say “Alexa- play Let it go” as opposed to “Alexa, play that song I like from Frozen.  The one Elsa sings.  You know, ‘let it go, let it go’.”  I’m hoping it carries over to her not rambling when she is trying to ask me a question either…lol!

When we took our trip to Orlando the kids asked if Alexa could come.  I explained that no, she couldn’t because she doesn’t travel and what if we forgot her when we left.  They accepted that but weren’t really happy.  My daughter was telling someone we met that “we have a black girl at home, her name is Alexa…” I quickly clarified that she meant we have an Amazon Echo/Alexa at home and that it was the black one.  The poor lady she was talking to looked so confused.  I was mortified…lol.  She laughed through understanding my daughters’ explanation afterward.

We get home from Orlando and the kids run inside… Alexa! Did you miss us?

Fun Features

With Amazon Alexa, you can sign up for Amazon Music and get streaming for $3.99 a month through the echo plan.  You can’t beat that.  You have to sign up through Alexa, if you just go to amazon there will just be the individual $7.99  option (which even that isn’t a bad deal).

Try Amazon Music Unlimited 30-Day Free Trial

Alexa’s Skills

Alexa also has various skills you can enable.  One of those skills is that she can tell the kids a bedtime story.  These are typically funny, kind of silly stories.  My kids get a kick out of it.

One of my favorite skills that Alexa has is I can tell her to add something to my shopping list and she does, which then causes the IFTT app to add it to my “reminders” in my iPhone.  No more forgetting the grocery list for me or trying to remember what we’re out of!  I just have her add it when I come across the fact I’m out and then I’ll have a reminder for the store.  No more forgetting to write it down or losing my list.

I know there’s been reports of people whose kids have ordered expensive cookies and such through Alexa, and I did put a passcode on there just in case to prevent that but my biggest concern is the kids being misunderstood and getting an answer or song that isn’t kid-friendly.  So far, the only thing they ask that I wish they wouldn’t is for Alexa to play “oh my God look at her butt.”  I can thank the Sing movie for that.

Do you have Alexa? What are your favorite features?

Our Non-Disney Trip to Orlando

Non Disney Trip To Orlando and Stay at Sapphire Falls

Non Disney Trip to Orlando

Orlando Birthday Weekend

*This post contains some affiliate links.  This means that if you click on one of the links I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you*

We recently took a trip to Orlando (which we do quite often), but this time it wasn’t for Disney World. For my daughter’s 6th birthday we decided to get out of town for the weekend and she wanted to check out the American Girl Doll store. She has fallen in love with the Wellie Wisher series and has been begging for one. I figured her birthday was a great time to get it and while we were there we could have lunch at the café. Easy birthday weekend plan right? My only problem was finding a place to stay.  It’s rare to have a non Disney trip to Orlando but can be a nice change of pace.

Where to stay for a Non Disney Trip to Orlando

I wasn’t too familiar with the area surrounding the Florida Mall (where the store is located) other than knowing that at night you don’t want to be caught out there alone. The Disney resorts were a little further than I wanted to drive in relation to the mall so I went with a Universal Orlando Resort. I figured there would be a nice pool, we could always walk around City Walk and it was a short drive to the Florida Mall.

I booked the Lowes Sapphire Falls. It is a beautiful hotel and the staff was very friendly! My only complaint is that you are charged for resort parking which is just a big pet peeve of mine.

As we walked into check-in there was a young woman greeting everyone as they entered. My daughter says “It’s my birthday!” to which the young woman smiled and said “Happy Birthday!” The check-in process was smooth and my husband went back to park the car and get our bags while the kids and I headed up to the room. While waiting at the elevator the greeter came over with a “Happy Birthday” card and a shell necklace for my daughter. She was blown away and was convinced that this young woman had made the necklace herself. It was such a sweet, kind thing to do and I was blown away by the customer service of it all.

The room had a very beachy feel and the bool was gorgeous! Little Miss B (my daughter) even made friends with one of the lifeguards who would call to her by name. The pool at the resort is fantastic and there’s a fun slide as well. We spent a lot of time there!

Things to do and see…

We went to City Walk for dinner. I will say this is one area that is very different for a Disney fan. It’s more of a nightlife driven fun place rather than the family friendliness of Disney. It’s not bad, just different. I liked that we had the option of walking or taking a boat ride from the resort to City Walk. Each resort has its own boat so you don’t have to stop over at another resort for passengers. For dinner, we went to the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium which is an amazing restaurant. If you’re ever in Orlando I recommend checking it out!

American Girl Doll Store & Cafe

The next day we headed over to the mall to visit the American Girl store. Little Miss B knew which Wellie Wisher she wanted so that didn’t take long. She was able to pick out an extra outfit with a gift card she had been given as well. My son, Little Mr. H, is 3 and he was having fun pushing strollers around and playing with blankets. Soon it was time for lunch and we headed over to the café. The food was good and the prices weren’t crazy either. It was small, but both kids enjoyed it a lot.

Also, in the mall is Carlos Bakery and they are in the process of finishing up a Shake Shack! Two of my NYC favorites! The mall itself is gigantic and included an M&M World as well as a Crayola Experience. The kids were pretty eager to get back to the pool so we didn’t check it all out, with the exception of the M&M World pit stop for green and blue M&M’s.

Carlos Bakery Orlando

It was a nice weekend getaway. The resort is very relaxing and beautiful. The staff was incredibly nice. It’s also not too far away if you want to visit the Florida Mall or even the Mall of Millennia.

My Top Baby Shower Gift Ideas!

All of these are tried and testing items as well as practical.   Practical can be very important when it comes to things for Mom and Baby.  While clothes are wonderful and amazing, many times new moms can be overwhelmed with the number of newborn clothes they receive, not to mention how many of those are not season-appropriate and won’t ever be worn.

  1. Diapers (various sizes)- There’s not a mom I know who wasn’t grateful for diapers.  No, they aren’t flashy and shiny but oh so needed!  Want to get creative with the diapers? Make a diaper cake!  My favorite diapers are from Honest Diapers ! Amazon offers many choices though for Diapers including Huggies and Pampers !
  2. Sophie The Giraffe– Make fun of it if you want- but I’m telling you from experience babies love this thing. When I had my son the nurse at the hospital was sharing how Sophie is part of her staple baby shower gifts to people.
  3. aden + anais Swaddle Blankets– These blankets are light, breathable and great for swaddling! They get softer the more they are washed. They are also nice to help provide extra protection over a stroller or carrier.  These are also useful even past the swaddling stages as light blankets for toddlers. My soon to be 6 year old uses it on car trips to cover her legs when she’s cold.
  4. Kinsa Smart Stick Digital Thermometer – Medical Thermometer with Fever & Health Tracking for Children and Adults– I LOVE this product! It’s so easy to use and helps me keep track with the kids are sick.  Side note- make sure you actually read the directions with using the extension piece or else you’ll get mad and frustrated for an hour like I did when in fact if you read the directions it’s incredibly easy lol)
  5. Aquaphor – This stuff works wonders! It’s a multi-purpose ointment that can be used from chapped cheeks, scrapes/scratches, diaper rash and more.
  6. Books- It’s never too early to start a book collection for the new baby! Some of my favorite picks are- Goodnight Moon, The Wonderful Things You Will Be, Moo Baa La La La, A Book of Sleep, and I can’t forget The Book with No Pictures (which is great for when they’re around 2!)
  7. Nursery Care Kit– These always come in handy!
  8. Bibs– whether used when feeding or to protect baby’s clothes from drool they are always handy!
  9. Baby Wash- My favorite is California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash, Fragrance Free. For whatever reason Johnson & Johnson broke my kids out on their faces.  The California Baby may seem expensive but it just takes a pump and the soap last a long time.
  10. Don’t forget Mommy! – A bag with items for mom to take to the hospital  is a great gift and very useful.  Travel size items of toothpaste, face wipes, small brush and hair ties, ect. make the trip to the hospital a little easier. This is a great option- Women’s Premium 19-piece Necessities Travel Kit.

Lessons Learned From Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat

If you haven’t met Pete… you are missing out.  Before I share some of my lessons learned from Pete the Cat, let me give you the story of how I found Pete.

My daughter started kindergarten this last year and shortly after she came home singing a song that went with a book they had read. She came home singing  “I was rockin’ in my school shoes, I was rockin’ in my school shoes”  I didn’t know much about it but she would repeat the chorus and bounce around while she played.

A couple days later we get home and she says “Mommy!! You HAVE to listen to this!” and with all the excitement of a 5 year old starts to explain the book they read that day…

“Pete the Cat had four groovy buttons…oh no! one fell off, did Pete cry? (she yells the answer) Goodness No!” she repeats counting down until she gets to zero and then says-“Pete looked down at his shirt and what did he saw? His belly button!  (at which point she totally starts to dance and sing to the tune of Fergi’s “My Humps” ) My buttons my buttons, still  got my belly button” and that leads to her breaking into a burst of hysterical laughter.   This…made me turn to Google to find out what all the entertainment was about.

This cat is a cool, groovy, laid back blue cat that teaches kids helpful lessons in a fun entertaining way.  I was able to download a few of the songs and they were on repeat.  Both my 5 and 3-year-old were obsessed, so much so the songs were stuck in my head.

Lessons I’ve Learned From Pete the Cat-

1. Stuff will come and stuff will go…but do we cry? Goodness No! (Four Groovy Buttons)

Quote Pete the cat 4 groovy buttons

Your day will bring many situations. Do we get upset or stressed over it? Goodness no 🙂

2. Give it your all (Pete the Cat Saves Christmas)

Clouds, heart, Pete the cat quote

No matter what you do or how big the job is, give it your all to get it accomplished.

3. Sometimes all it takes to go from Grumpy to Groovy is the right accessory. (Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses)

Girl, sunglasses, the right accessory quote

Some days you just need the right accessory to boost your confidence. You’ll find though you had it inside you  all along ❤️

4. No matter what you step in, keep walking along and singing your song…because it’s all good. (Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes)

Shoes, water, quote

Along the way you are bound to step in something you didn’t expect. Don’t let it stop you. Keep moving forward.

5. Do we worry? Goodness No! (Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes)

Lessons from Pete the Cat

Like Pete, we often experience uncomfortable new environments that we are required to make it through. Do we worry? Goodness no! We do what we have to do- make that presentation, hold that meeting, whatever the situation calls for- and we rock it!

These books do a great job of helping build kids confidence and grit which is something I absolutely love about them.

Do you love Pete the Cat? What’s your child’s favorite Pete story?
