Teachers Appreciation is next week!  If you’re as busy as I’ve been and this has snuck up on you- no worries!  I’ve got some great ideas for that can be put together quickly!

Teachers have a very important job, and they put up with so much.  They give their all to their students each year instilling wisdom and a love for learning.   Considering that they lay this educational foundation for our children they don’t get paid nearly enough.  These gifts don’t make up for for that, but they can be tokens of appreciation for all that they do.

Cooking With Kids- Fun Recipes To Try With Kids

Recipes with Kids littlemissblog.com

This post includes some affiliate links. This means that if you choose to use the product I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.  I only recommend products and/or services that I honestly like myself.

Food and kids can always be a challenge.  For us, it always has been.  Kids go through different phases of what they’ll eat (or not eat) and it can be frustrating as a parent. There are so many suggestions and opinions on how to raise a non-picky eater.  Every child is different- ultimately, we have to offer them healthy choices and try and make the best of it finding a balance in food choices.

Suggestion: Making Your Own Baby Food

I made baby food fresh with both of my kids.  I made a variety of different types of foods, even ones that I personally don’t like as a way to hopefully have a non-picky eater.  Can I tell you- it didn’t work? Maybe for some people, it does and that is fantastic.  I’m not saying not to try, I ‘m just saying if it doesn’t happen immediately don’t be discouraged.

What I’ve learned about toddlers and food

I try my best to get the kids to try new foods and to get the appropriate servings of food groups.  It doesn’t always work…in fact, it probably fails more often than not.  My pediatrician told me that toddlers eat when they are hungry.  If they aren’t hungry it’s a task they just don’t want to do.  Meaning, don’t offer them junk food because it makes you feel better about getting them to eat something.   This is hard, and I don’t always stick to the rule sometimes I give in and give them the goldfish and juice.  However, I’ve found that if I am patient and wait until they are actually hungry, they are more apt to eat real food.

Involve Kids In Cooking

Kidstir is a monthly subscription box that comes in the mail with recipes and tools for kids to cook with. It makes it convenient because you get a great set of recipes and kids love to use the tools that are especially for them.

Salad Bar (from Kidstir)

Introduce your kids to new salad combos at a restaurant salad bar and encourage experimentation. Ask them to try a new veggie or dressing or combination of toppings on their lettuce. At home, you can then create your own salad bar with bowls of toppings. Think greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula), protein (hard-boiled eggs, cubed cooked chicken), veggies (corn, cherry tomatoes, grated carrots), and dressings. Then let everyone at the table customize their own salad. This makes a fun dinner when the kids’ friends are over, too.  For more on Kidstir check out my review- Cooking with Kidstir!

Don’t forget the Croutons!  I know they are my son’s favorite part of a salad! This recipe is super easy!

This one is a little trickier to involve the kids with however, they can still help with getting the seasonings together as well as getting the ingredients out.  Sometimes making them part of the process can encourage them to try new foods as well!

One of my favorite resources for recipes is from Annabel Karmel she has a lot of fun, delicious recipes for the littlest members of the family up to the oldest member.

It’s a constant struggle for a lot of us to get our kids to eat new things, and to eat healthier choices but it’s part of parenting.  Hopefully, you can find sanity in the fact that you aren’t alone in this struggle.

February is Heart Month

February is Heart Health Month! littlemissblog.com

February is heart month!  My daughter has been participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. (If you’d like to donate you can through this link!)  This is the school’s first year participating with this particular charitable cause.  She’s learned a lot about her hear and heart health.  In turn, we all have become more aware of our heart as well. The month is almost over, but these are still great tips to apply all during the year.

Heart Healthy Calendar

Your heart is a vital part of your body and it’s important to keep it healthy.  As my daughter so blatantly pointed out to me… without your heart you aren’t going to live.  Oh, the words of six-year-olds. (See her video here)

Nourish Interactive has some great healthy tips and printables for kids to help encourage a healthy heart.

Heart.org has some great tips on how to know if you’re keeping your heart healthy:

  1. Avoid smoking and using tobacco products.
  2. Be physically active every day.
  3. Eat a heart-healthy diet.
  4. Keep a healthy weight.
  5. Keep your blood pressure healthy.
  6. Keep your total cholesterol healthy.
  7. Keep your blood sugar healthy.

Heart.org also has a great resource- Simple Cooking with Heart  that includes kid-friendly recipes and talking points to discuss with your kids.

It’s so important to encourage healthy habits in our kids.  I’ll be the very first to admit to you that before kids I didn’t have the healthiest of habits, but they’ve definitely inspired me to change so that they will grow healthy and strong.

25 Interview Questions to Ask Your Child

Interview Questions to Ask Your Child littlemissblog.com

Interviewing your child can be quiet entertaining. This is a great activity to do when the weather isn’t good and you’re stuck indoors.   Record their answers and date them, it’s a lot of fun to go back later and see their thoughts and replies. Not only can this be very entertaining but enlightening as well. It’s a great way to open the lines of communication with your child.  It can help you understand who they are and where their interest and curiosities lie.  As parents, we typically know a lot about their interest and curiosities but sometimes they’ll surprise you or throw in something new.

You can also pick a couple of these questions just to start dinner conversations or topics while driving in the car. Who knows where you will wind up once you get going!

40 Cold Weather Activities with Kids

It can be a bummer in the winter when you’re stuck inside because it’s too cold to go out. We’ve recently had a cold snap here in Florida that has made us put on closed toe shoes!  Here are some ideas to help you prevent from going stir crazy and getting cabin fever.  These are some fun, easy ideas to do right at home! Not only are they entertaining but a lot are educational as well!

40 Cold Weather Activities You Can Do With Kids Inside. Cabin Fever creeping up? Here’s some solutions! littlemissblog.com

The List:

  1. Play dress up. Pirates & Princesses or Superheroes & Villans are always a hit at my house.
  2. Create something cool with Legos. The possibilities are endless!
  3. Finger paint – for really little ones you can do this with yogurt!
  4. Organize Pictures- The kids can help! If your kids are like mine they’ll love looking through memories.
  5. Use sticky notes and let the kids write captions for family photos (Just make sure they don’t write on the sticky note on top of the picture).
  6. If you have a pet, put them in another room- hide a treat and then let them out to see if they can find it. If you have a dog and it’s like mine you can also hide their ball and then ask the dog where the ball is so they search. (Warning- There could be 1 or 2 side effects…some dogs think they can talk and will look and bark at you when you ask. The other is that you may be playing ball  for the rest of the day or your pet will drive you nuts)
  7. Learn how to fold some easy origami
  8. Make paper airplanes
  9. Play with water beads (Check out this water beads, ice, and fake snow activity!)
  10. Have your kids make up a show and then record it.
  11. Interview your kids and record their answers. You could do a range of interview questions. 12. Record your child explaining how to do something. This could be something like- making a food item (cookies, sandwich, pizza, ect), putting a toy together, brushing their teeth, anything that has steps to it.  For example, first you take the dough out, then you put the sauce on  it… It is entertaining and it helps them learn to express themselves and think through a process.
  12. Let your child do product reviews and record them. This can be of anything. Their favorite toy, a tv show, laundry detergent, anything that they can give their opinion on. Have them tell what it does or what it is about and what they think about it.  You may be surprised at the thoughts they have on some everyday products. Encourage them to sit up straight and make eye contact.  It’s good practice and will help them be more comfortable as they get into school and have to do reports in front of people.
  13. Learn something new! There are lots of free online classes that you can watch together or you may have something new you can teach them.
  14. Make Forts
  15. Popcorn & a Movie- You could choose a new one or a classic to introduce them to! I also like to do this with old tv shows like “The Little Rascals” or “I Love Lucy”.
  16. Bake something
  17. Have a Dance Party
  18. Exercise- Babble  has some great suggestions
  19. Make Hot Chocolate and Tell Stories

Read Books- Need some ideas? (Book List) Great Kids Books You Should Check Out! The perfect way to take an adventure while it’s cold out! littlemissblog.com

  1. Play Games- a couple of our favorites are “Pop the Pig” and “Shark Bite”. I especially like these two because they are great for young kids. We enhance these by incorporating questions, or making them use a specific word in a sentence, or spelling a word before rolling the dice (for my 6 yr old, my 4 yr old likes to attempt it too though. Let’s just say he spells dog  and cat a lot…lol). Here’s a cute bowling game from Babble also!
  2. Organize something. It’s a great time to go through clothes and closets to take out what they’ve out grown. You can also organize books, your cabinets, or pictures and let the kids help.
  3. Have a Tea Party
  4. Make puppets! Use paper bags, or socks…be creative!
  5. Magic Carpet Ride – You can do this if you have a rug on your floor , or you can even throw down a blanket to use. Then go on your adventure!
  6. Make slime– You can just make slime or add to it!
  7. Paint Rocks– any rock will do, we like to get river rocks from Lowes or Home Depot
  8. Hide and Seek- Need a moment of silence? LOL This is a great way to break up the day!
  9. What’s missing? Get some objects (toys, blocks, picture frames, ect) have the kids look at them and then have them go out of the room or close their eyes and remove one of the objects. They then have to figure out what’s missing. Then it’s their turn!
  10. Sensory Play with Rainbow Rice!
  11. Be an Engineer using straws and playdoh
  12. Play- If (This)….Then (That). Give a situation, for example- If “I open all the windows” Then “it will get really cold in here!”  My son’s favorite question is always If “you give a mouse a cookie” Then “he will ask for some milk!”
  13. Make your own snow!  If you’re somewhere like me in Florida that never gets snow, this is SUPER cool!
  14. Make cards, or write letters to family members just to say hello and mail them.
  15. Play Simon Says
  16. Play Musical Chairs- If you have Alexa she can play with you just say “Alexa, start Musical Chairs”
  17. Teach the kids how to separate laundry (My 6 year old is sooo into this! It’s her job and she gets upset if someone does it for her…lol!)
  18. Have a race with toy cars- you can improvise and make your own ramp or race just race them across the floor.
  19. Play I Spy – This can help practice colors and shapes. It’s a great way to help your child remember them and recognize them without it feeling like work.

A Review Of Loog Guitars

A Review Of Loog Guitars

*I received a gift card to put towards this purchase from Share-a-sale, however, the thoughts and opinions are my own*

I purchased a Loog Guitar for my son’s birthday.  Last year on Christmas we had gotten a Schoenhut piano for him and my daughter to share and they love it.  He also has some bongos that he loves to beat on and sing songs.  There’s a lot of guitar players in my family and it seemed only natural that he would love it too.

Quality kids guitars aren’t easy to find.  That’s what I love about the Loog! The Loog Guitar is a child-sized, 3-string guitar that tunes like a regular guitar, plays like a regular guitar and even sounds like a regular guitar.  The really cool thing is that learning finger placements for the Loog will translate over to a six string as well!

My son just turned 4.  He carries this guitar around everywhere!! He’s so excited about learning and makes up songs and sings them while he plays.  His songs sometimes go like this-

“I’m grumpy, I’m grumpy, my mommy makes me go to bed, I’m grumpy”

So maybe he’s got a career in country music? Just Kidding! Seriously though, it’s been proven that music offers many benefits to kids.

Music stimulates the brain regions that involve reward and emotion.  It also teaches kids to listen.  It’s been shown that it also helps them pick up foreign languages and detect speech in noises.  Not to mention, kids who study music are also shown to have higher SAT scores.

The really cool thing is that does sound like a guitar and is made well overall.  I wish I had ordered the strap to go with it, I think it would come in handy.  That will be my next purchase with Loog!

Have you tried a Loog Guitar or another instrument with your child?

Hulk Smash Dance Birthday Party

We’re super busy during the month of December, with Christmas and then my son’s birthday on New Year’s Eve.  We try and separate his birthday from Christmas so it’s a rush the last week of December getting everything prepared.   We’ve had some fun birthday themes, and when trying to come up with this one it wasn’t too hard. I think it’s a perfect party for a 4-year-old boy!  He absolutely loves the Hulk and anything “Hulk Smash,” and when my sister got married back in June there was a dance floor at the reception that he went nuts over.   So we combined the two and had a great time!

The Details of the Hulk Smash Dance Party

My husband had serious doubts when I told him what I wanted to do.  I think when I said dance party for some reason I think he pictured ballerinas.  However, by the time we decorated he was a believer lol.

Originally we hoped to do it outside, but the weather turned rainy and cold so the night before we opted to do it in the garage.  We wrapped a thick black plastic around the garage to cover up some storage bins and the windows. I bought a pack of silver fringe curtains and we hung one in the entrance way of the garage.  The remaining fringe curtains we hung up on the wall as a photo backdrop.

I found the cutest disco ball cups for the kids on Amazon.  I added the “Hulk Smash” fist to them to tie it all together.  We made a green punch to be “hulk” juice.

The cake turned out AMAZING!  My mom made the cake and icing and my sister decorated it.  The fist was made out of pound cake covered with fondant.

The inside of the cake was green with purple icing.  The crumbs around the bottom are oreo.   In case you’re wondering…oreo and buttercream go very well together!

I used my Cricut and some vinyl to cut out this Hulk image that was placed on the plastic behind the cake.  My son really liked it.  In fact, it’s now on the wall beside his bed.

We had some Christmas lights that you could set and change colors on, so we hung them around the garage and set them to green.  We also had some green dance party lights that were on the floor while the kids were dancing and a DJ Party Laser light that was on the walls and floor.

I set up a playlist on my Amazon music with for my Echo and the kids had a blast dancing and playing. There is definitely a difference in the speaker quality of the Echo and the Echo Dot.  I got a pack of LED light up party favors and glow sticks that were a big hit.  The kids had a blast playing with them.

The laser lights were crazy! It really messed with your eyes when it was dark in there but the kids had a blast with it and they didn’t seem to bother their eyes at all.
